It can take several days to work the air pockets out of the system, trapped
air can make the temperature sensor act odd.

Did you rinse off the old antifreeze off the engine compartment?

What coolant did you use?

Thanks for the update. Your temperature sounds normal to me. The
t-stat open and you have full inside heat, then the engine warms up to
running temperature which is higher than the t-stat opening temp.

I did not rinse the old anti-freeze off the engine compartment. Is there a
particular issue with that?

As far as coolant goes, I actually used distilled water as I wanted to make
sure the leaking was stopped before I pumped in a bunch of anti-freeze. Now
I know I've got to re-adjust the mixture, but I was going to check that
before winter anyway.

The temps seem to have stabilized somewhat over the last few days. They're
a little lower than before I replaced the thermostat, but I don't know that
the temp ratings on the thermostat were the same.
