One thing which I have always been curious about, and have never gotten
a definitive answer about, is whether the later 30 spline differential
and one piece axle shafts can be swapped in place of the diff and axle
shafts in the earlier housings. That would open up a lot of
possibilities for differential upgrades. IIRC from my research, about
all that is available for the 19 spline axles is the detroit locker and
the trash-lock. As for the shafts, most of the guys running those axles
are using a WARN full floater kit. If it is possible to swap a 30
spline differential into the older housing there would be a lot more
upgrade options for the older housings.
In my case it is pretty much idle curiosity- all of the later 30 spline
diffs will fit in my offset pumpkin 44 housing since it is the somewhat
rare 30 spline version to begin with. I haven't looked into aftermarket
shafts since I will probably re-use the stockers, but I know that WARN
lists their full floater kit for the offset pumpkin with 30 spline axles.
I'm a lot more concerned about the dana 27 front axle and what to
replace it with. A model 30 from a later narrow track CJ is the easiest
option but if there is a 44 that can be swapped in without undue hassle
and/or expense I'd be open to that too. 8^)

Re: '70 Renegade Help
Hi Del,
I would guess changing the spline count would just need to change
the to the corresponding side spiders, there's all kinds of wheel
bearings, which again we just press on the bearing to match the housing,
at least that's done everyday in hot rodding the Ford nine inch.
Your Dana 27 is fully as strong as your 30, of course they're not
as strong as my 1946 Real Jeep's 25, though:
