Re: 5-speed tranny whine-'03 TJ 4.0L
Hi Ken,
A whine related to wheel speed is more than likely that wheel's
bearing, probably telling you're low on differential fluid or it's
diluted with condensation and needs changing. Of course noise equals
damage.

I would normally agree with Bill on that, but I know for sure that my noise
is from the tranny. If yours is from the tranny - it's probably damaged
gears. I changed the fluid on my T-5 and it didn't fix it. I have found
that tranny work is not cheap, and a lot of the time, it might be worth it
to replace the tranny.

Re: 5-speed tranny whine-'03 TJ 4.0L
I wonder what tranny is in my TJ? I'm not sure if the whine/growl/howl is
something wrong or simply "the nature of the beast". You'd think it
shouldn't have tranny trouble with only 28k miles. If it has a problem I'm
lucky because it's under warranty. But if it's a normal noise I'd like to
figure that out on my own - if I have the dealer look at it I'll tie it up a
day or so.

You have an NVG 3500. They are known to be noisy, but usually just when in
neutral and the clutch is engaged.
