4 low not engaging
I had a 4" lift put on my '97 wrangler about a year ago. The guy that
put it on was a friend of a friend and lives really far out of town.
His dad actually runs a mud-sling competition and he works on all
kinds of jacked up mud mobiles and he did a good job with the install.
The only thing wrong is that now the 4 low doesn't engage. He said he
talked to the lift manufacturer and it was just a small adjustment
that needed to be made, but I have since moved and lost contact with
this guy. Any ideas of what may be wrong so that I could attempt to
repair this myself?

Re: 4 low not engaging
It is theoretically adjustable depending on how insane the amount of the
'body' part of the lift is...
If the body has been lifted, then it might need a linkage extension that
usually comes with the kit.
Other than that, you just go under, loosen the linkage set bolt, put the
shifter into 4 low with a 1/8" drill bit as a spacer from the lever stop
plate up top, set the t-case to 4 low and tighten the adjuster.

Re: 4 low not engaging
Me thinks you are having trouble with the shift linkage on the t-case.
You did not mention any trouble with 4HI, so I assume the tcase is okay, and
the front axle too.
You should be able to adjust the linkage at home. You might need a helper to
move the lever for you. As the lever is moved, you will see that it moves a
shaft. The lever is secured to the shaft by a bolt. The bolt could be loose,
allowing the lever to move but not move the shaft at the same time. You need
to determine where the shaft is supposed to ACTUALLY be for any given lever
position, then release the bolt and move the lever to the location that will
cause the shaft to be in the proper position relative to the markings and
detents.
The job is easy from a technical perspective, but may be a pain in the ***
to gain access. Good luck.

Re: 4 low not engaging
Hey Mike,
Is this one of the Jeeps where the shifter would strike the tub? If so, then
all that may be needed is to pull the shifter boot up and cut the sheep
metal back a little.
Wait, maybe that fix is for the transmission shifter, and its ability to
strike the tub when 2nd gear is selected.
