304 V8 question

304 V8 question
I understand that in 79 is when they added smog controls to the 304 in CJ's
and in 80 even more so. How can a non-engine-expert like me tell the
difference visually between 78, 79, and 80 304's? What exactly did they
add/remove/change? And if there is no easy way to tell, what is the hard
way? Any diagrams around? What do these "smog controls" look like?

When AMC introduced the 304" in '72 it was loaded with everything,
air pump and exhaust injection, intake fresh air gulp valve, exhaust
recycling valve, retarded spark, low duration retarded cam, and teeny
carburetor, and by '75 it had the catalytic convert. Unless you know
someone that'll SMOG a lawn mower, I'd pass. But if your glutton for
punishment I'll walk you through it.

If it's complicated then I don't need to know all the details, but I just
wondered the easiest way I can tell the difference between years just by
looking. Of course anyone can add/remove a catalytic converter but I'm
assuming there are some more notable characteristics to the different years

tell if it still the twenty five year old 304' is to crawl under and
look at the case numbers near the motor mount to see if the usual 360 or
401 cubic inch wasn't dropped in. Usually these SMOG parts mysteriously
