2002 TJ-problem filling gas tank
I've got a couple of problems; my gas tank and military claims office.
I can't fill my tank at anything less than 1/4 speed. If I try and pump full speed, the pump shuts off or sometimes spits fuel back out of the tank onto the ground. I took the Jeep to the dealer and they say the problem is the tank isn't venting correctly. After reading posts here, I have to agree with his assesment. BUT, he says the only way I can fix the problem is to get a new tank at a parts/labor cost of $750 (guess everything really does cost more in Hawaii). Does that sound correct? Also, I'm 'discussing' this with the Air Force claims office. I say the problem was caused by the shipper when they transported my Jeep to HI and they owe me repair costs. They say I can't prove that and it 'just happened' so I must pay. Facts are Jeep was fine when I dropped it off. I picked it up from the docks, drove it 1 mile and the tank problem's plauged me ever since. Anyone ever seen this problem occur spontaneously in a 3 year old Jeep with only 30K miles? And ideas if it could have been caused during transit to Hawaii? Thanks in advance. |

Also, I've tried filling at about 10 different stations with the pump
nozzle insterted 1/2, 3/4, 1/4, all the way in, to the right, left, upside down, standing on my head, etc. Same symptoms every time. |

Looks to me like you could remove the inner fender well and see if
the vent hose is pinched: http://www.----------.com/temp/TJtank.jpg God Bless America, Bill O|||||||O mailto:-------------------- redsoxalso wrote: > > Also, I've tried filling at about 10 different stations with the pump > nozzle insterted 1/2, 3/4, 1/4, all the way in, to the right, left, > upside down, standing on my head, etc. Same symptoms every time. |

And take photos while you are doing it, just in case you find actual damage.
You may in face be able to prove that the shipper did it. Did the alleged mechanic you took it to, actually find anything, or did he just say you need a new tank, based on not being able to fill the existing one? Earle "L.W.
