I decided to change my fuel filter on the same car you have. I left town for
a week, let the car sit in the garage during that time so the pressure in
the fuel line would subside. The filter cost me about $100. I was able to
take two of the 3 hoses off. The one that stopped me dead in my tracks was
the hose that contained a connector that required it to be pushed in evenly
on all sides. I tried everything to get it to come off but it wouldn't. I
didn't want to go all out and risk breaking the connector and then having a
useless car on my hands so I stopped and put everything back together. I
decided I'll have the dealer or a shop put it on for me.
Such a shame to have to pay someone $75 an hour for something I KNOW I could
do if the connector would just come off.

Doesn't every parts store have a universal disconnect kit for these types of
fittings?

Re: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Filter
yes, normally thats something they carry in stock, but might be out of. I
believe, or know of, two different kinds of disconnects, depending on vehicle
manufacturer. the cheapo tools are harder to use, but oh well. My ford uses
the circle ones with a little nipple type thing on the inner hole. Hardest
part was getting it around the line. then simply push the doughnut into the
opening of the filter where the hose goes in. There are some ball bearing
type connectors inside. basically the tool pushes them back in and away from
the groove on the fuel line, allowing the line to be pulled off. Could be a
strugle at times, but such is life.
