'00 XJ questions...
I've been poking around my new (to me!) XJ and have
some questions/observations for the group:
1. They quit doing shift motors for the front axle, at least
on Command Trac, right? I can't find one, and my front
axle is always on; the t-case frewheels it.
2. My rear diff has Chrysler 8.25 written on it... does that
mean it's a Chryster 8.25"? Duh...
3. Nice to find a huge, honking vacuum leak on the intake
manifold on a supposedly dealer-checked-out auto...
later XJ owners should look at that 'vaccum port-unused'
thingie shown on the underhood sticker. Mine was sucking
unfiltered air, big time.
4. The dealer very nicely power-washed the livin' crap out of
the bottom of the vehicle... now I have an intermittent U-joint
noise. Crawled around under it last night and can't find the
problem... seems to go away until I drive it some. When I
pull up after a good 200-mile trip, the clunking is unmistakable.
Perhaps the dealer washed all the lube out of the front dual
Cardan joint? I could find no lube points, I've got the needle
adapter.
5. I noticed that the vent pipe for the front diff seems to be
kinked quite badly where it comes out of the diff; fluid is seeping
from the front diff pinion seal. That could be the cause, right?
6. Cold AC is blowing out of the center defroster outlet, causing
fogging of the windshield (on the outside). Is this a Daimler-Chrysler
'feature', or is my duct motor stuck/defective?
Your thoughts, please... I'm getting the factory manual soon.

Thinking about it after posting, I'd come to the conclusion that the AC
might
not be blowing on the windshield after I'd fixed the vacuum leak... I
definitely
did *not* find a vacuum front hub shifter; after consulting the online
manual,
it appears that the front axles are supposed to be spinning all the time
(no locking front hubs). This means that there is no vacuum involved in
the 4x4 shifting. I'll check the defroster this morning and let y'all know.
