Which year was the best?
I know this might be a dumb question but I'm new to this site(and old to the world) but I am looking for a used Liberty and was wondering if any particular year was better than other years in terms of quality and dependibility? We had an 02 Tracker which was supposedly the best year for the newer models but it was totaled(not our fault) last week and I realy like what I see in the Liberty as a replacement. I'm looking in the 04-07 price range from what I've seen. Looks like most of them have the 3.7 engine which I think is a common one with Jeep.
Any help would be appreciated. Thnaks.

3.7 was a decent engine dispite what edmunds.com says. But if you haven't learnt that the guys at edmonds.com are idiots by now you're not salvageable. lol
I just did a 10 minute search and it seems they are all pretty equal. The only thing I dont like about the liberty is the IFS. If it weren't for that, in all honesty I'd have bought one by now. If you plan on wheeling any more than 2-3 times a year I'd suggest you look for something like an 01 XJ. In my opinion they are better but ofcourse it depends on your needs.
If an XJ looks ok to you maybe take one for a test drive, I'm sure you'll be surprised at how well they ride for a solid axle. Everyone rags on the XJ for having coils up front and leafs in the back but I think it makes the vehicle handle great both on and off road.
check out www.thejeepliberty.com for more info though.

This vehicle will be mostly my wife's drive for the next year or 2 and it will be mainly city miles until I take it hunting then she'll be demoted to the old Corolla. I used to have a 84 Toyota SR5 with the solid front axle which I loved but it has since passed on.
A friend has a 03 ruby(modified) and his wife a 04-05 liberty (stock). The fuel mileage on the liberty (smaller motor) is worse than the ruby. That said he hasn't had any major problems with the liberty still running but so is the ruby.. Good luck
I think the word was that the 2004 KJ received the JDpowers award.
No problem with window regualtors, and reliability very good. There were recalls on most lower ball joints and still continue to replace the ball joints under warranty, however without the needed grease fitting (zerk)

We have an 04 Liberty and it's still running strong...no serious issues (other than the ball joints as mentioned). Everyone is always shocked that it's over 6 years old, looks good as new. Been a fantastic vehicle and I would recommend it. Mother in law has the 05 and she loves it too. Wouldn't do an 02, but 04-07, you should be ok.
Just Keep in mind that from 04 and ON...
Many new electronic stuff was added including ABS (tone rings higher maintenance costs)
TPS (tire sensors annoying and $80 each to replace)
ESP-TC Traction control thinks you need to back off the gas to stabilize when you need to power out of mud of snow, you may enter a put-put mode enabled and find your self still stuck.
Window regs above 04...dah damn window stuck down.
Luckily My 04 has none of that non sense going on.
Oh ya and sunroofs, can leak if drain gets plugged, so choose your rigs carefully.
