Default Air filter on a 2006 Liberty 3.7L

So, after 52000 miles I can't ignore it any longer. I have changed the air filter at recommended intervals, but there is another, much smaller filter located directly under the air filter, inside the box, that is in desperate need of replacement. It is a rectangular piece of foam, held inside a three sided plastic box, and it is hopelessly soaked with oil and dirt. Can someone tell me what the hell this is, what it does, and where I might be able to get a replacement? And...if it is this dirty, is there something else going on with my car? The people at the dealership are worthless, and my local parts store wasn't any help either. Thanks for the help.

Hey ! I'm sorry I don't have a 3.7L but I would suspect it's the filter coming off the PCV valve. (positive crankcase ventilation) See if there is a hose going from the airbox to one of the valve covers. If there is , thats what it is. I know CTC or a parts place would have one.

That sounds like the filter for the pcv. Should find it at ctc.

Ever consider just washing it?

You mean Sponge Bob?

I had the same questions when I first bought mine. I was able to find a replacement at the dealer (which was slightly different than the original) but in hindsight it was really unnecessary and of course overpriced. It is a PCV vent filter but as mentioned cleaning it is sufficient.

Ya sponge Bob !
It is located under the main air filter on the right side of air filter box..
If this is really dirty, I can only imagine that the PCV valve has also not been replaced.
Change the PCV valve and clean Mr. sponge Bob first with Fantastic (pulls out grease) then use regular dish washing detergent and rinse in "luke" warm water.
The KJ likes 5W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil and a good filter like Purolator,mobil1.
Change your oil by every 5000km.
If it looks brown and dirty on dipstick in the am after 3000km, after switching to synthetic, change it. Syn's have better cleaning properties and will clean the dino gunk out by 3rd change.
