I have a few friends that have the liberty and only thing they dislike is its mpg (sucks). One had a jeep with a 4 lit in it and it did better mpg. Reliable haven't heard any complaints from the guys.

Welcome! Awesome on the trails ... but please (shudder) don't call our beloved KJ's "cars" ... lol. I'm at 60k with zero problems.

I have over 160000 KMs on my 02 and have had no major issues. In fact, the 4 years i have owned the vehicle i have driven it off-road countless times. As long as you maintain it, it should be fine. As with any vehicle, no one can guarantee you won't have problems though.

Thumbs up Re: Are the 3.7 reliable

Just to update this tread:

The Jeep Liberty houses a The 3.7 liter PowerTech V-6 engine.

For information you can refer to the following web site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_PowerTech_engine

The engine is actually rock solid as it is still used today for quite a few trucks:
Applications:

2002-present Dodge Ram
2004-present Dodge Dakota
2004-present Dodge Durango
2007-present Dodge Nitro
2002-present Jeep Liberty
2005-present Jeep Grand Cherokee
2006-present Jeep Commander
2006-present Mitsubishi Raider

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Jeep_Liberty/Engines

So far I have not encountered any issues concerning the engines and it is rather interesting that I have not heard of any issues with its engines. In this case no news actually good news on the internet :)

It is a 4400lb 4x4 with a good engine, fuel mileage is not the best but good solid Jeep.
Many have 200,0000 km and no real problems other than accessories like water pump, alt, ac, replaced.
The secret to longevity is quality oil and filters every 5000km, flushing the coolant every 5 years with appropriate Hoat coolant, spark plugs every 30k. Your driveline should also get new lube in there. The rear diff should be serviced every 20,000km. Tranny every 50k and ATF+4 in the front transfer case every 35k. Keep a regimented fluid plan and the Liberty will perform very well.
Also an emission service/throttle body cleaning with new air filter helps mileage.

What LibertyTC said!

I am a firm believer in following all recommended scheduled maintenance to the letter.

As of this morning, our 2004 Sport has 211103.0 KM exactly!
And still running very strong.
No leaks, no problems!
The only parts that have been replaced due to being worn out and leaking were the water pump (along with a new thermostat and new serpentine belt, and complete coolant flush as preventative maintenance) and a new A/C condenser.
Oh, and a new battery three months after we bought the Jeep.

I just had the KJ in to the dealer to check the alternator out and they gave it a clean bill of health.

The last camping trip we did, our rig averaged 23 miles per gallon on the Trans Canada to Chilliwack.
And our Liberty was packed to rafters!
