wrangler water leaks

Well i am still having water leaks now on the passenger side and still a bit on the drivers side (floormat area wet)
The dealership really cannot find anything wrong and its an hour drive to find that out
Also i cannot leave the well fitted rubber mats i have as then it really doesn't dry and through time is going to smell like a chicken coop.
The jeep has 3918 km and its pretty well leaked day one but i really don't want to start putting miles on it to the dealership back and forth ,i would like a positive fix
I am going to TRY and call chrysler and see what they say

Re: wrangler water leaks

Hardtop or Softtop???

The tops will leak at the front header and/or freedom tops if the seals are not clean. The freedom tops may also leak if the back screw through the soundbar are not installed or loose. Had a leak once at the header. I removed the freedom tops, cleaned and lubricated the seals, then reinstalled. Problem solved.

Re: wrangler water leaks

mine is the hard top and i do see the rain dribble in when the door is open as they forgot to put some sort of gutter or deflector, but this leak is not coming from the top and it leaks in the driveway sitting more so thanj when i travel.

Re: wrangler water leaks

Had the same issue as well on my 2010. At first I assumed it was the top , but a close inspection showed no water marks stains or moisture on the dash, seats or inside of the tops. I tracked it down to a spot on the lower door sill. no guff. The water actually traveled down the door seal on the outside until it reached the lower part of the door where it pooled and spilled over the door jam (sill) there are tiny seams in the metal there and that is where it came in . I sat in the Jeep during a rain storm and watched it with a flashlight sure enough it started seeping in at the bottom of the door. While driving the wind must keep the seal clear cause it didn't leak at driving speeds. I applied a liberal amount of petroleum jelly to the door seal and filed the seam in the frame with a dab too. Problem solved. BTW the dealer had no clue what was happening nor did they help in this. I will try to remember to post a pic of the area on the door sill that is the culprit. I hope this helps.

Re: wrangler water leaks

This does help and a picture would be good as the seam you're speaking of well not real sure but i am going to take a look this afternoon
Thanks

Re: wrangler water leaks

I spoke to chrysler canada today and they pretty well said to go back to the deakership again. The dealership here has a klak contractor specialist, that all he does
Its to the posint now i cannot use mats as they will not allow the floor to dry and it starts smelling like a wet cat.
The above thread about the lubricant is worth a try and i wonder if the 2010's all have this trouble

Re: wrangler water leaks

@woodman - I am in the exact same position as you. I've got a 2010 Sahara Unlimited with about 2500 km's on it and the Freedom (Hard) Top has leaked since day one right in the center above the dash, and somewhere else such that my floormats are soaked.

Took it to the dealer and they re-installed all of the seals, and just yesterday, after the weather here in BC went above freezing, some dribbles of water came in from the top above the dash, and the carpets are still wet.

Called Chrysler today and they told me to take it back to the dealer again. I'm taking my Jeep in tomorrow (2 hour drive!!!) and they're going to get their "leak specialist" contractor to do the seals again. Fingers crossed for round two.

Re: wrangler water leaks

Well , my roof didn't start leaking (pass. side ,top where wind shield frame is) until I took it off for the first time the other day at my marina shop. I thought I was careful putting it back on and I watched a couple YouTube videos but with no sound....I'll go back over the weekend , redo it and squirt some water and see what happens. It's a 09 Wrangler X we bought preowned with 18k on it....anyhow , I'll keep you posted. Oh, one thing I noticed was a little piece of foam strip was already missplaced on the pass. side and I put it back like the drivers side...

Re: wrangler water leaks

I'd like to follow up on my last post, and continue the telling of my leak tale tale. Since my last post, some interesting facts have come to light. Here we go:

I reported above that the first time my Freedom Top leaked (2 weeks after I first drove my Jeep off the lot brand-new) I took it to the dealer and they replaced all of the seals using their "best leak specialist contractor" so that, since we live 2 hrs away, "this would be a permanent fix to the problem" and we "would not have to come back again". Turns out this was not what happened.

As I reported above, it leaked again yet what they actually did in the first attempt at fixing the leak, was follow a "technical service bulletin" which told them how to "repair" some of the leaky seals since the leak specialist was unavailable.

So that brings us to the present. This past Saturday the dealer did manage to get their best leak specialist contractor to replace all of the seals on the roof, and they are confident now that it will not leak. I'm crossing my fingers but holding my breath at the same time. I've done some reading on the interweb and also talked to a real nice lady at Gemin Parts in Burnaby, who tells me that this is a chronic problem among all Freedom Tops, due to Chrysler cancelling their contract with BestTop who supposedly made the best (leak-free) Freedom Tops.

Anyway, it's currently below freezing here today and dry, but there's some rain in the forecast for this week so we'll see how it goes. Will let you know if the problem has been solved or whether the saga continues. Wish me luck. Thanks for reading.

Having the exact same leak problem with my brand spanking new 2011...so they obviously haven't found a solution. Thanks for the pics KAVIK, hopefully that will help solve the problem.

Vibe9 12-20-2010 02:21 PM

Re: wrangler water leaks

Wow, I thought for sure they would've addresed that in 2011's.
Just brought my brand new 2010 in for the 3rd time for leak fixing. Hoping third time is a charm.
Luckily the dealer has been very supportive.

Just got min eback form the dealer yesterday. Bloody rear seal around the glass was leaking. Fixed now but its a PITA drying out the back before rust sets in.

Re: wrangler water leaks

i have also had the same problem with my 2010 jk after a normal rain fall my front foot wells are full of water and after having it fixed at the dealership it still leaks even worse so i gave up and just pulled my front carpets so they don't get moldy and pulled the plugs :confused:

sinjans 12-27-2010 09:23 AM

Re: wrangler water leaks

Ahhh I'm in the same effin boat. I just extracted a gallon from my rear foot wells. PISSED OFF right now. She's going back in this week. Funny thing is that I got a call yesterday from chrysler canada about customer service. needless to say I vented. I'll update later this week./

Re: wrangler water leaks

I started all this but then i go sick so the wrangler has sat since nov dealership does want a look and chyslers has issued a file #.
Its coming in at the sides and rolling over the door shresholds

Re: wrangler water leaks

So after being in for leak fixing at the dealer 3 times, mine is leaking still. This time right above the dash in the center where the two hard top panels meet. Also, the driver-side carpet is still totally soaking, though I'm unsure where that water is coming from. :-(

Im planning to buy soon 2011.... just wondeirng is there anything I can check for to see if there will be leaks? (im assuming not).....im a little scared off now because im in rainy vancouver but we will see....=P

Re: wrangler water leaks

The dealer has vowed to get this fixed for me, so I trust that with perseverance they will get it dealt with. I absolutely love my Jeep otherwise. Not sure if there are any tell tale signs whether one roof will leak or not; though I would suggest checking that the freedom top panels are aligned perfectly (mine seem to be a bit off when you look at the roof head on).

sinjans 12-31-2010 08:28 AM

Re: wrangler water leaks

I still recommend a Jeep 10 times out of 10. My dealer seems comitted as well. He said they will keep her over night and completely clean the carpets after they fix the leak..

Dont be too picky when buying. Check the carpets to see if they are wet inside. Go for a test drive on a rainy day or the day after. The leaks seem to come after purchasing anyways.

Vibe9 12-31-2010 11:20 AM

Re: wrangler water leaks

My carpets were replaced once already as they smelled completely like mould; my dealer has agreed to replace the carpets again once the leak is found and fixed.

On that note, does anyone have any suggestions / clues as to what's causing the driver side carpet to get soaked? Could this be caused by anything else other than roof leaks?

When its raining water will drip from the roof to the carpet when the door is opened. Doing it often can result in a wet carpet

Re: wrangler water leaks

I hear you sinjans, however, it's consistently on the driver side and never on the passenger side. Furthermore, it never seems to dry on the driver's side. This tells me that water must be coming in from somewhere other than just opening the door.

sinjans 01-17-2011 02:56 PM

Re: wrangler water leaks

Those freedom panels can be pesky too. also the door seals can be a B

Vibe9 01-17-2011 03:02 PM

Re: wrangler water leaks

Yea the freedom panels are a B. My dealer has ordered new ones for my jeep as a potential solution (since redoing the seals numerous times has not helped) and it appears that my freedom panels don't sit flush to one another or with the roof. When you compare them to other jeeps mine just look "off".

Re: wrangler water leaks

I have a 2010 and it leaked from the day I got it, looked closer and noticed that it was probably leaking on the lot even. Mine was leaking from the hardtop panels so I got some silicon lubricant spray and cleaned all the rubber and it hasn't leaked since. Make sure to spray all the seals and wipe it off afterwards. Use a silicon spray as it won't eat the seals and may even protect them. Be sure to tighten down the top as much as you can too, makes a big difference.

Hope this works for you because it sure made my day.

Vibe9 01-27-2011 06:26 PM

Re: wrangler water leaks

@Starcat your solution seems too simple. My Jeep has leaked from the hardtop as well since day one (and before on the lot as the carpet was mouldy) and it's been @ the dealer 4 times now for waterproofing and it still leaks.

Sometimes simple works best ;) I know a couple of others who have done this and it worked for them too. The silicon swells the seals and makes them work better. Mine got dusty after a run with the top off and even tightened down hard they leaked. Cleaned them and no problems.

I will have to show this thread to the dealer when I go in there for the next round of waterproofing. thanks starcat.

Re: wrangler water leaks

Hey ! I use that silicone spray all the time on the roof/door seals/tailgate seals. Even on the zippers of the soft top. Touch wood I've never had a leak and also the doors never "seize" shut because their froze. I do get water coming in when it's raining and the doors open right at the top of the roof where it attaches to the windshield frame but thats not a "leak". I love my silcone !! Another trick is to spray it all in the fender wells, the mud etc. won't stick and it a lot easier to clean next time !

Hey guys I had a class on the water leaks today on the freedom tops and soft top. Your dealer has the info and KITS to fix this problem.. Be persistent with them !! There are alot of steps to fixing these leaks. If I can help with what I have learned I will be more than happy to.. dirtfan50@yahoo.com
I work for a dealership in Kentucky USA

Re: wrangler water leaks

yes i would appreciate any info,my leaks are on the driver's side floor right where your left foot sits and gets wet during the jeep standing still in the rain.
Dealership here just keeps me coming as there leak expert cannot find anything and it will not leak with a hose bath.
i am going next week so if you have info i would appreciate it
i started this leak thread

It will be interesting here in southwestern ontario to see how the dealerships tackle this ,so far its been the leak specialist only no repairs or replacements yet.
I have the procedure printed out

On tues i took the jeep in for the water leak find again ,this time they did look at procedures for water leak detection from chrysler, they ended up saying they would order new door seals both front and passenger and put them in next week.
So we'll see

Re: wrangler water leaks

I have to chuckle reading all this. Someone told me "It's a jeep; what did you expect?" My own opinion is that the design engineers didn't stay up late at all, thinking out some obvious problems. I doubt that they even put the prototype through the typical water or temperature torture tests. The gutters over the doors are a prime example of what I mean. But then I could see that the problem would be more demanding only because the roof is removable - now that would add to the price for sure. I've solved many problems by just keeping it parked in the garage and only bringing it out on sunny days. But if I get caught in a shower I just put the fan on HI for a good positive interior pressure. I could go on about the "non-marring" plastic interior finish too, but what the hey - it's just a jeep! Lol.
