Canada What Type Of Fuel Do You Use?

I thought this would be an interesting topic!

I found something interesting in my time owning my 2007 Honda Civic DX-G that I get 28 MPG on Shell Regular Gas and 31 MPG out of Esso Regular Gas! Even though there supposed to be the same fuel grade, I get different results very strange.

I was wondering if anyone has a particular about type/grade/brand of fuel for your jeep? I am especily interested in the 2012+ with the new Penestar motor, also the older 3.8L motors interest me too.

Side topic, does the older 3.8L motor really slug as bad as everyone has said? I've heard people saying the new penestar dosn't make use of the torque as well as the older motor did but it's brute force power unit makes up for it, thoughts?

Interesting that your MPG is lower with Shell vs. Esso (or in Canada your L/100 KM is lower). From what I heard is that Shell uses less Ethanal than most fuel companies (I could be wrong).

But in anycase, mines a 2011 (I know you ask for 2012+) but you wanted a reference point with the 3.8 as well. I fill up on Costco 89. As for the sluggish 3.8....not at all. I had the chance to get the 2012, but I was happy with the 3.8 (I had a 2010 previously) + all the cash incentives they threw my way. Fuel consumption on stock wheels I get 11-12 L/100 KM, on 33's I get 12-13 L/100 KM (after tune), and 13-14 L/100 KM without tune (consumption is based on dash reading, I don't calculate it myself anymore).

Power is all relative. Prior owning a Jeep I had a little Toyota 4 banger.....so going to the 3.8 was like heaven...and still is.

Right on, I know what you mean for sure. I'm going from a 1.8L to a 3.6L manual it's like getting into a rocket ship for me. I do live in canada but I still calculate fuel usage in imperial because that seems to be the only way otherwise I'd be converting everything i read online.

I thought it was strange too, but I was getting almost 100kms more out of a tank using ESSO over Shell. Not to mention the fuel guage itself would drop at different areas then ESSO did, i'd get a huge drop the first quarter with Shell, then it would level off around half way, ESSO it would be level the top half and drop the second half. Very strange..

Shell v power with a Diablo Sports performance tune for 91. Feels like a new jeep with the tune.

Let me start by saying I like my 3.8L, solid engine with 130,000klm runs like a top and always starts no matter how cold. coming from a compact car and a 98RAM with a 5.2L the 3.8L is fine with me. Had I switched from a HEMI RAM or a Challenger I am sure I would not have been happy with that power drop.
I too ordered a 2012 then cancelled the order, I really didn't feel the 3.6 was that much better then my tuned 3.8 to justify the trade up.. The 5spd auto in the 2012 on the otherhand is much better then the 4spd auto on the 3.8..
So back to fuel, Around here i seem to get better mileage on Husky fuel 87 octane. Before mods I was able to get 23-24mpg hwy. Now with mods, In the summer I run TowTune on 91 Octane for the best mileage.. As it stands I have been able to pull up to 19-20 mpg on Husky 91 Octane, with heavy 35" tires, tuned for 91 Octane. The operative word is TUNED, running 91 Octane without a tuner may net you worse mileage then running 87 Octane.
The trick to better mileage is very dependent on your driving style.

Well thats great info. But I don't see myself getting more then 21mpg, because I did a run upto Midland on the weekend and the best I was able to get the computer to spit out is 21MPG and thats just doing the speed limit if I went over it would drop to 18mpg. But I havn't broken in my motor yet so who knows right now. I heard the 3.8L was worse on fuel then the 3.6L. I havn't driven the older 3.8L so i have no idea what it feels like, but I know this 3.6L has a ton of power and pull and I enjoy it over my 1.8L :-P

So far with half and half city and highway im around just under half a tank on my 2 door and at 300kms or so. I have yet to run a full tank though it.

Also from what I can see, I don't think theres a tune out for the new Penestar motor yet.

Side note I read a bit on this.. apparently programers don't void your warranty? If this is true.. I might get one. 500$ to save some fuel and get some more power might be worth it to me in the end. Hmmmm... any Jeep sales specialist want to chime in on this engine tuning buisness?

I hope its just me, But i fine my 3.6 to be the slowest, NO ***** anything i have ever driven...

I love my Jeep,, But no matter what i have to gear down for every freaking hill.

If this is the all new powerfull Pentistar, I can even think what was before this.

I Am assuming you have a auto transmission correct? I dont know much about the auto since i am using manual. But i know i got all the torque and power i need. These engines are all torque, so there low end is crazy. I sometimes chirp my tires coming out of 1st if i am trying to quickly jump into traffic. Maybe we should compair some time heh
