Re: Tire Question, Plus winter Tire Question.

it is important to know that allseason tires are made of a different rubber compound than winter tires. As the temperature drops all season tires get harder and therefore less effective. winter tires will remain soft and pliable. I personally like Nokian Hakk LT tires lots of sipes and studs (the studs are optional). In my opinion there is no safe alternative to a good winter tire. I paid 1700$ for stock size 17" steel rims and tires from Kal tire. Good luck in your decision making and happy jeepin.

But Do they make them in 35 or 37"? The local EMS run Duratracs on all their ambulances and rave about them. I ran them in 35" for 1 winter. I ran PitBulls last winter and will continue to run them. They are not for everyone though.

i agree duratracs are great tire. I run them for the other three seasons but where i am the roads are very icy so i need the extra sipes and studding for all the highway driving. Winter tires should be bought to compliment the conditions where u live and the type of roads u will be on most. I wouldnt run the stock duelers anywhere icy and very cold. oh and i am not sure u can get a 35 def not a 37

The beauty of Duratracs, even the 35" are studable so no matter how icy the conditions they are great. If you don't wanna run studs then a dedicated snow tire like a Blizzak is best.

There is also a difference between a "snow" tire and an "ice" tire. Ice tires don't work real well in deep snow. Where we live, we are 55klm from town, most of that being back highways which usually are not well plowed so we require a more aggressive tire to paddle through the snow. But everyone's situation is different. I would think a studded tire is still best for ice.

Its not the snow that worries me its the ice. I am more concerned about stopping my jeep than crawling through the snow. all seasons give a false sense of security. Plus my wife drives it also........
every time she goes out i wait for the phone call " I got into an accident'.

Re: Tire Question, Plus winter Tire Question.

My question would be "Why not keep the 18's and Bridgestones for winter and buy nice rims and tires for summer?" That's the route I went. Buying 18"ers are brutal, I opted for 16" rims and 285 DuraTracs as summer shoes and put the 18" stockers back on for the winter. I've done two winters now on the Bridgestones and they're a good dependable tire, are their better?, likely but hey, they're bought and paid for! I have older Bridgestone AT's on my GMC 4X4 too.

I know that phone call. Only mine was because she ran off the road in a white out in her Chevy Cobalt
half a mile from home. If anybody has ever tried to rescue a stuck Cobalt, forget about it, they have no place to even hook a tow rope to! So it was all man handling. Finally got one tire to bite the road and zoom she was gone. I'm laying face down in the snow and she never even looked back!!!

Hakka LTs are your best all around winter tire. even it it isn't studded, it surpasses all others.
had them, loved them. even with 6/32 left on them they got me through last winter. mind you, city driving
