You're absolutely correct.

Just reread your post. When you said dealer I thought you were referring to service meaning you went to your first oil change.

Why every 12 months? I can see the 10000 or the cpu oil warning but I just don't understand the 12 months. Does oil go stale or loose its viscosity when not being used? If that's the case they should start putting best before dates on oil jugs

Oil breaks down over time in your engine, whereas in the bottle it's not mixed with O2.

If you use Dino oil, every 5000kms[3000miles] is recommended.
If you use Syn oil, every 12000 km [8000miles] is recommended.
Regardless what dealer says as they only want to make money.
But, you should change maximum 12 months if you go through seasons.
Hot, cold, hot, cold causes condensation. Engine will burn off moisture as it gets hot and stays hot. But, long term oil breaks down and loses some of its protection.
I would not go past 12 months even on low mileage!

Condensation is oils worst enemy. There's no way to prevent condensation from contaminating the oil. Use the manufacturer's recommended oil change frequency. Synthetic oil will not prevent condensation from happening, but will prevent a more frequent oil change and costs more because of what it is.

Well that's my two bits worth anyway.

Actually heat is the real enemy of a motor.
Condensation develops from the motor getting hot then cold then hot then cold and on and on. But, condensation is burned off when the oil gets hot. Syn oil does not stop the condensation but because of its makeup it coats the metal surfaces better than Dino oil and lubricates better as well helping the parts move easier with less friction and wear.
A mechanic I talked to one time told me if I lined up 10 motors and he took them apart, he could tell me which ones used synthetic oil just from the wear.
