Magnaflow Muffler Install

Attachment 2730Did my first performance modification last week, off course I'd pick the hottest freakin' day of the year to attempt it so I can truely say I've got some (serious) "sweat equity" into this mod.
Put on Magnaflow's Performance Exhaust System #15160 (name's a bit misleading, it's really only a muffler). Install is really idiot proof - the fact I did it proves it.
The muffler comes in a huge box that turns out to have enough form fitting foam to let the muffler survive an elephant stampede untouched! There are three parts, the muffler, a clamp and the instructions. The instruction were immediately discarded as "real men don't need no stinkin' instructions" Both tail pipes are weld right to the muffler.
Two vital items to bring to the dismantle - WD 40 and dishsoap.
Depending on how long your original mufflers been in place (mine since Dec 2010) spray WD40 on the clamp bolt. It's an unusual type with a curved head bolt which fits into guide you can't get a wrench on. The single nut on the bottem presses in a similar "washer head" in the bottem of the guide. Don't waste your time working the nut all the way off to remove or slide the clamp out of the way - YOU CAN'T! The clamp is spot welded to the muffler pipe.
Once you got the clamp loosened, move to the rubber hangers. Both your old muffler and the new Magnaflow use rods welded to them which press through the hanger rubbers with a big head on the end to prevent them from pulling back out. You've got some play to slide the rubber hanger back a bit. Do it and put the dishsoap on the head and as much of the rod as you can. With a pair of channel-locks, one jaw on the head and the other on the back of the rubber, press it out. Once you've got both hangers out, you can now twist the whole muffler on the pipe. Give the muffler a couple of twists to break it loose froom the pipe, then grab the WD 40 and spray it down inside the flange and bingo off it comes. (Well yours will, me I twisted and hammered and wiggled for 20 minutes til I thought of the WD 40, then it fell off on top of me!)
You can have the Magnaflow muffler installed in less than five minutes, (if you don't stop to wipe the sweat outta your eyes and "beer break"). Hit the rod ends with a little dish soap and they go right through the rubbers and the clamp the company provides is identical to the factory one so you don't even have to go after different sockets. There's no adjustments involve as the pipe is fixed and the rubbers stayed in the factor positions.
Then it's ignition time! Gave my jeep a real nice rumble a idle and a throaty bark under acceleration. That "bark" has costly me likely 2 or 3 kms of gas milage "cuss I just gotta hear it!"
Included some pic to help anyone thinking of making this mod.

Great write up, thanks for that.

Where did you buy it from and how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking.

Re: Magnaflow Muffler Install

Purchased it from 4Wheel Drive Hardware (Ohio USA) for $538.99 (US$, so final price is dependant on your credit card's exchange rate, which in my case worked out to $564.55). They offer free shipping over $99 so I had it sent to my buddy's cross the border, and brought it back to Canada myself. UPS will rape you big time if you use them to "broker" your stuff. 4WD's sales rep, I talked to on the phone said it would be 2-3 weeks delivery, as his weekly shipment from Magnaflow was sold out for that week (called on a Monday) so I would get mine form the following week's stock plus a week to ship. Buddy called that Friday and said I had a package at his place, apparently I got bump forward!
(Advertisement pic I posted was from a local parts dealer's weekly flyer to show muffler uninstalled)

Good job on ya for posting the install.

For anyone looking to purchase locally (Canada) our CAD price is $569.95+tax and we can currently have them in 1-3 business days.

I think I might just go with a universal magnaflow muffler, I don't need anything that fancy!

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the "after" picture. I would thing that they could easily get crushed as they hang below the bumper.

Price wise I wud say that's about a norm as the muffler for my Sunfire GM wanted $400. stainless steel won't rust..yea that's why I was looking for a new one..it is rusted to H.... Ended buying a CTC for $50 installed. I agree with above that's allot of money to have something that's hanging looking for a rock or branch to rip off. How about a CTC Cherry Bomb tucked up underneath neatly , not yelling here I am come and hit me.. and if it does then yu haven't lost much. My opinion of experience.. lol

:banana::banana::banana::banana:The tips hangin' down was never really an issue as she's 80% a daily driver and Walmart curbs are no real threat. Beachin' is my main off roading and as you can see their high enough to avoid getting in any sand. Rocks are very few and far between in the area of southwestern Ontario I live in, most are landscaping in the neighbours' yards and they REALLY REALLY frown on me rock crawlin' over them!

Sand sounds like fun, but wouldn't that wear down your tires more then usual?

I was planning to goto a few trails out east, I joined OF4WD and found a few good trails I'd like to run around on nothing to crazy, pretty simple stuff but I really wanted to get my CB Installed before i go out and do that, but I need the parts and find out how to get it all up and running. Just haven't had the time to get all the parts together. All i got is the CB head unit and Mic.

i would think it would depend on what sort of tread you're running, but i would agree with you when hitting the beach with an A/T tire as the sipes will likely get packed full of sand causing a loss of performance on the road and premature wear of the tire...

Would really suck to wear down my tires as it's close to 2 grand to replace them. I am running the stock wrangler tires, but I think i'll be sticking to dirt and rocks myself.

yeah, i hear that!... lol

i give my tires a quick visual inspection every month to make sure everything is ok, no new damage, pick out the little pebbles from the treads, check the pressures, etc. might not actually do much for the tires, but it does give me peace of mind...

i run the stock aluminum rims on my WJ and they tend to lose a little air over the month... typically anywhere from 4-7 psi/month. hopefully this won't be as bad once i get my new tires on...

Re: Magnaflow Muffler Install

just picked up my gibson exhaust last weekend off kijiji for 50 bucks surprisingly. The guy purchased it in hopes it would fit his truck and didn't so he sold it to another gentleman who wanted to do the same but also could not. Seems the guy didnt research how much they were worth. Only way I could tell what kind it was, was from the photos. Amazing sound and very tough exhausts. Makes the jeep sound much more aggressive!! Thanks for the info. May go for a magnaflow next on my mothers truck.

I like the gibson exhausts aswell there pretty cool, but the cheapest exhaust i could find is a generic magnaflow. I want a nice sound but i don't want to drop to much money on it incase i crush it.

A Gibson for $50! Man that is a real score, looked at Gibson's Metal Musha system first, because I wanted black tips, but the system was way overkill!!

Had a Cherry Bomb on my 97' TJ for awhile. Wouldn't suggest that to anyone! Wasn't on very long. just couldn't tone that thing down!

Have the Gibson dual tip muffler on my 2011' Wrangler. Nice throaty sound and gentle purr at highway speeds.
Basically the same setup as the Magnaflow.
Nice upgrade.
The GF can turn the radio up.

Re: Magnaflow Muffler Install

The honest truth of the matter is "I really don't know!" Without dyno testing a before and after no hard
figure is available in that sense. Personnal seat of the pants experience is the jeeps "feels" a little more
snappier, but that may be the result of the change in shifting pattern as I now rev the motor up to 3,000 to "embrace the rumble", where as before I usually was pullin' a gear just over 2000. Gas mile age wise,
I have three vehicles on hand at any time, and drive what ever suits my fancy or need on any given day - or what's got gas left to try to ride out the latest price jump, so it may take me a month to go through a tank of gas. I road tripped to Nova Scotia this year again but can't make an apples to apples comparison because the first year I trailered my Harley. That trip I can tell you the Jeep was a gas guzzlin' dog! To be fair though, my trailer hitch was dealer installed on a non-trailer packaged Sahara - meaning 3.25 gears not 3.75's. This combo IS NOT suited to mountain towing! Thank god for a 6 speed
manual - 'cuss I was rowin"!
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
