The stock JK headilghts stink. I'm looking to install Cibie headlights and upgraded wiring/relays etc. (from Daniel Stern) on my 2010 JKU. The DRL function needs to be deactivated in order to install the full kit. My local dealer says the DRL cannot be deactivated on 2010-and-up JKs. Has anyone had any experience with changing DRL function? Thanks in advance.

 

the DEALER probably won't deactivate your DRL's, probably for 'safety/warranty/don't sue the company in an accident' reasons...You'd have to bypass the DRL/main headlight relay...and, that might be a bit of a problem...

I know people have been retrofitting everything from LEDs to Bi-Xenons to Jeeps...but, getting around the DRL thing...hmmm

Remember that, normally, the DRLs run a slightly lower wattage through the stock low-beam filament...at least that's what happens on my 'other vehicle'...maybe it would just lower the intensity of the Cibies in DRL mode?

Why exactly does your dealer say that the DRL has to be deactivated?

Thanks for the reply. The light kit supplier was pretty clear about deactivating the DRL - something about the reduced duty cycle of the DRL not being compatible with the required relays in the new kit. My local dealer has actually been pretty cooperative in trying to help me with the DRL issue. He has tried to deactivate the DRL, but said that the diagnostic computer will not allow him to do it - I just don't know if it is that ne can't do it, or if he doesnt quite know how to do it. Unfortunately, the power requirement of the upgraded bulbs and Cibie H4 lights means beefier wiring and relays are required for installation. I can modify the stock bulb pigtails to fit the new H4 connector, but then I'd have to use lesser ouput bulbs, which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole exercise. Frustrating.

 

Are they HID's?

Def need to disable the DRL or you're going burn out the ballast.

From my understanding, you can reprogram your DRLs to be a different set of lights or deactivate them totally. To reprogram, you can use ProCal module and I am not sure if Superchip module can do it.

 

re: Cibies...

You know, I was thinking...perhaps you could just install a factory-style toggle switch in the panel where the seat heater switches are (under the heat/air conditioning controls) and wire it to the Cibie relay and heavy wiring to the Cibies...? There are usually a couple of blank spaces there...

And, just disconnect the factory 'stalk' wiring...??

However, that might be easier said than done, since new Wranglers have auto-light switches (off/on depending on lighting conditions outside)...and that's probably connected in with the main computer somehow...grrrrr...

OR, maybe install some kind of 'stock' headlights on a bracket somewhere and connect to the stock wiring (DRL enabled)...and do the Cibie thing into the auxiliary switch as noted in the previous paragraph?

if you wanna make it easy on yourself do the ipf h4 conversion. WAY better than stock,northridge has them.
