Front vent ate my wifes keys - need ideas to get out
.I lost a set of keys down the front vent ( in front of the windshield). I was hoping that someone might have a solution to my problem. Do I really have to remove the roof, Roll-cage, and most of the top of the jeep to get the window to fold down 20 degrees???? How do I access the vent. I guess with a coat hanger.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I could get the dealer to do it, I imagine this is rather costly? I prefer the el-cheapo way. Thanx.

yikes, are you referring to the defrost vent on the inside of the Jeep? was it a big set of Keys, perhaps as TSmith said you could use a magnet. Can you see any bit of the keys at all?

No ,the problem is that a magnet, woukld grab any metal, and you cant get anything down there without dropping the windshield 45 degrees. The manual says to remove the top and front safety rails. BIG job. I was hoping for some DIY ideas, Thanx guys!!

hard to say what to do really. Allotl would depend on how far down they have fallen. The more you drive it the more the keys would rattle around and one would assum the keys would make their way to the lowest point they can. There must be a diagram you can get off the web to see what the venting system looks like with in the dash and that could possibly give you a better idea of how to tackle this problem.

You can purchase a telescoping magnet the size of a pen with a swiveling magnet end. You may be able to direct this where you want it. Is the heater ducts not plastic? You shouldn't have much of a problem with magnet touching metal items. Or have you already tried this?

That is not a vent, just an opening behind the dash to allow folding the window down. A telescopic magnet is your best bet. It would also be easier to pull the dash top off rather then pull the roof... I have a Timmy's card fall behind there once and it worked its way through to the floor after a week or so.
FYI quick fix so it doesn't happen again:
Go to Canadian Tire or Home Hardware and get some black foam pipe insulation for 1/2" pipe and stuff that in that gap. Works like a charm.. No more dash monster eating your sunglasses and keys.
