Hey guys,

anyone have a cold air intake on their JK? A buddy of mine just put one on his dodge ram 1500 hemi, and made me realize, every vehicle I've own prior to my jeep, I've had an intake on it...mind you, my last two vehicle were a 92 acura integra and a 06 honda civic si, but I was wondering if you have one, how you like it? Did you go big and go with K&N?

any feedback is appreciated...

Your vehicle already has a cold air intake from the factory, all the aftermarket stuff is rubbish, especially if you drive in dusty areas.

Any coldair-intake mods to the JK wrangler are a waste of time/money/safety

Same with the air filters, should just use FRAM #10348 ($13 bucks) and just-

If you decide to get one despite the above advice search the web for air filter stats. You'll find that K&N are actually the worst filter out there, the paper filter your Jeep originally came with does a better job of keeping crud out of your engine..

It just doesn't make one iota of sense to me anyway to think that the engineers who design the engine in the first place would deliberately UNDERSIZE the air intake system of their engine. "Hey Joe! - lets undersize the intake so the engine will perform just enough so they can sell a lot of them". "Sure Mike, then the extra money they make can get us a big pay raise".

In fact, what should be the case is that the intake should be OVERSIZED so that as the air filter begins to restrict more and more air, the engine will still continue to operate efficiently within its acceptable parameters. Or am I not understanding this thing at all?

Also, why wouldn't the manufacturer caution the owner to stick to particular replacement parts - or else! The engine oil intake cap says "5/20 weight". I'm not going to put in anything else. They never said "only paper air filters".

Don't get mad at me....like you, I'm just trying to make sense of it all....somehow. Thanx!

The stock airbox isn't undersized, the difference is in the design. Factory air goes through the box, a resonator, and a couple of tubes which all slow the air down. Aftermarket intakes are straight through so you get an increase of air going in at WOT.
For a CAI to actually make any real diffrerence you'll need the filter, larger TB, bored out intake (most Jeeps are 52mm), high flow cats, pipe, and muffler.
So for all that expense you might see between 5-10hp at the flywheel around 4500rpm. At the wheels where you need it? Nada!! Personally I don't know anybody that drives their Jeep at 4000+ rpm. You will get a small improvement on throttle response in a certain rpm band and they do make a neat whistling sound when you stomp on the gas pedal though...and you'll probably lose a couple mpg to boot.
