hello , I have a 97 zj grand cherokee with 5.2l engin .
this week i went back in the trails , was in 4low .and decided to do a smal drag race of like 100 feet on flat sand...,
herd a bang in the transmission . stoped ... didnt find any difrence , so works fine. 5 min later . less power and a zzzzzzzzz sound in the trany that follows the gaz pedal . and now dose it on every gear , including revers... so we decided to call it a night .. next day ... truck works fine ... 15 min later , cant go any faster then 40klm and the zzzzzz sound came back ... so I turn to the side , put it into park , stop the engin , wait 2 min , and start again ... and the truck works fine for around 15 min then all starts again .
I checked my oils and everything is fine ... so now Im hear looking for help ... where should I look ... can anyone help me ?

What transfer case do you have? Most T/C's can't take more that about 35km/h in 4 low so you may have broken some teeth on the chain gear. The only quick way to tell if you broke something in the tranny is to drop the pan and see if you have any pieces in there.

thenk you for your reply , um transfer case ... only has 4 high .. and 4 low ... ok so I will trop the trany oil pan and see if there is anything in there ...
if there is nothing ... where should I look next ? do you think ?

You have the NV249 T/C.
Pull the drain plug on the T/C and look inside and see if you can spot anything laying on the bottom, hopefully not in either case. Small filings of metal are normal in either one but anything larger is a repair.

and can it maby just be sensers ... or cylenoids? cause the truck really works great when I start it ... its only a few minutes later that the zzzz sound starts and the shifting problems start ,...

There are 2 solienoids in the transmission, it may be the problem but I've never heard of them making that kind of a noise before. Have you checked to see if there are any codes showing?

no I didnt have a chance to get it checked yet ... do you think reajusting the bands and changing oil and filter might help ?for this problem ?

Turn your key from off to on, off/ on, off/ on, leave it in the on position and in a couple seconds there should be some numbers popping up in the odometer window. If it does post up the numbers and we'll see what they are.

thats cool ... what will the numbers mean ? problem codes?

Yes, those will be problem codes the computer has logged.
