...well, i got the motor mounts installed and an alignment done. grand total w/parts, labor & alignment=$415

however...

i still have noises underneath which i think i have narrowed down to a P.O.S. tranny mount and a rotting t-case crossmember. for now, i can only afford to get the mount. part source wanted $140+ for it, overdrive automotive can get me one for $64. new HD high clearance cross member from IRO is $200.

so the mount should be here monday, then i can throw it in after work. maybe santa will bring me an IRO crossmember for Christmas, lol

FYI- my reasoning in going straight for a tranny mount was the fact that when i crawled under it and pried between the mount and tranny, i definitely moved it better than 1/8".
also when looking around under it today, i could see right through the mount like there is bits of it missing... it's 14 yrs old, likely its as shot as the motor mounts were... for $64 it's worth a shot.

...stay tuned....

...had a small revelation today...

i noticed that when i was under my WJ checking out my tranny mount i noticed there is VERY little clearance between the t-case and the skid plate. i think this is part of my vibration/knocking issue. when pricing out parts from Iron Rock Offroad, i found a drop kit for my skid plate. the thought then occurred to me that yes i dropped my cross member (which the skid plate connects to) but there was no mention in my lift kit about dropping the skid plate as well (where it bolts to the frame). so when i install my new tranny mount tomorrow, i'm going to cut a couple of pieces of heavy wall pipe to act as spacers for the skid plate where it mounts to the frame (i think my t-case ones are 1.25"). i'm hoping this will resolve the noise issues i've been having since installing the lift kit...

will post the results tomorrow....

...well, my tranny mount finally arrived today. only took a week, lol... unfortunately, it's the wrong one... apparently in 99 jeep used 2 different transmission mounts. i think that they were using up old stock or something, but mine has a square base that mounts to the transmission housing and the one they sent has sort of a "tail" on it and 3 bolt holes instead of 4. carquest says they'll have the correct one in the morning, so i will be able to install it then and see what's what.

...managed to find a piece of rigid gas pipe i can cut a couple of spacers from for the skid plate where it mounts to the driver's side frame rail. likely will tackle that while changing the t-mount tomorrow.

...and the hits just keep on coming, lol...

so i went in thurs morning to have my tranny mount swapped out. that didn't happen because the bolts are seized. so we've hit 'em up with some penetrating oil and gonna try again monday.

also, we found what is likely the biggest cause of all my noise/grinding issues...

turns out my front prop shaft is screwed. the cv joint at the rear end of the front shaft is done. the boot is ripped and the shaft sits way off center... it's like the bearing let go.

the first phone call for a replacement said $750 wholesale, retail was somewhere around $1400. the second call said $650 which is still way to high for my budget. i was willing to pop for the $400 to get the front shaft conversion kit from IRO, but we found a replacement from a wreckers for $250.

so back in i go monday morning to get the front prop shaft and tranny mount replaced.

still waiting to hear about a tranny crossmember...

You have to wonder why driveshafts are so expensive.

Is it a double cardan shaft or cv?

its the cv style... to my knowledge only the v8 had the double cardan style. if only i could pull out mine and use the v8 one... i doubt its a straight swap, and the budget for this year is almost beat...

the xj's and zj's have the double cardan shaft on the I6. Wonder what the difference is. When you get the shaft take some measurements and I'll compare then with the xj shaft I have somewhere.

got the replacement prop shaft and new tranny mount installed today. what a difference, lol!!

the prop shaft was definitely screwed, tons of play in the joint. tranny mount was toast too... i brought the parts home so i could take some pics and measurements, just haven't had time yet... the replacement shaft is in much better shape than the old one, but i think i have just bought some time with this fix... ultimately i will switch it over to the double cardan style, likely next summer. couldn't put the spacers for the skid plate, the frame rail bolts are seized pretty good and he didn't want to be the one to break them. if i get a break in the weather i will give it a shot...

in summary, replacement front prop shaft, installation & swap out tranny mount = $402.27 incl. tax...

vibrations/grinding reduced about 95%, but still need skid plate spacers & driver's fr wheel bearing. also a t-case crossmember (not that that has anything to do with vibes)...

boy, santa better be good to me, lol...
