Default New owner of a 2001 WJ with a couple of questions on parts

Hi

So I picked up a 2001 WJ today. Very heavy on the miles but was a very good deal I think.

However, there are a few bits missing that I would appreciate if anyone can give me any leads on
so here is the list of missing stuff

Owners manual
Tonneau cover
1 x key
2 x remote key fobs
little plastic 'hatch' that is in the interior tailgate that I believe exposes the manual release.

I have seen some key fobs on ebay. Is this the best way to go? I did notice they all say that they have to be programmed by the dealership. Is this true or are there some instructions on how to do this yourself.

Lastly I would like to fit a class III hitch. How easy is it to install the electrical portion?

Thank you for any advice or leads you are able to push my way

Charlie

Owners manuel go to a Chrysler dealer and ask them for one ( i got one for my 03 tj free of charge) or there are websites u can download it.
A tonneau cover I have no idea what that is
Door and ignition key can be programmed if you already have 2 programmed keys but if not then the safest way go to the Chrysler dealer and have one made ($80 each) a nice rip off price.
Trailer hitch if u buy one and have the shop where u buy it install it they will usually wire it up too all in the installation charge.

Morning Charlie,
The tonneau cover you can get through the stealership and if your missing both key fobs you'll have to take it to the dealer to reprogram everything. Price differs place to place but still expensive.
The cover for the manual release I'd just look around in a junkyard for, actually you may luck out and find the tonneau there to.
The hitch wiring is easy to install, the connector is located in the back just above the wheel well on the driver's side. plug it in and route it through a rubber grommet in the floor and then to the hitch.
Any other questions just ask.

Thank you very much for your replies.

The dealership local to me quoted 107 plus tax for each remote and 50 bucks to program it.

I just picked two used ones up on eBay for 30 dollars US. I will be ringing round dealerships to see if I can get a better price on programming as I will need the two keys I just bought, again on eBay, doing as well.

Thought I would get two keys so that we have a spare and if one gets lost I can reprogram the key myself.

Next question.

When you put the heater on a warm setting and it has been off for a bit, a little bit of 'smoke' comes out of the vents. Smells strange, not a burning smell. Also cold seems to be fine but no heat comes out of the vents when you turn the climate control up. In the passenger footwell underneath the glovebox is a black plastic unit the is hot to the touch. Is this anything to do with the heating. I did the blend door test and it passed.

thanks again

Charlie

If it's a sweet/ sticky kind of smell it sounds like you have a small anti freeze leak in the heating core or hose. Keep an eye on your level and if the passenger side footwell starts to get wet/damp

So indeed it looks like a faulty heating core.

Is this a tough job to change out?

So a quick update.

I did some searching around and saw that getting to the heater core was a pretty major tear down and to be honest a little intimidating. We took the jeep to a couple of repair place and got quotes for the repair that ranged from 700 bucks to 1500. Hours quoted went from anywhere between 6 and 12 hours.

Yesterday we went and spoke to the second hand dealership where we bought the vehicle AND the warranty from. They sold us the warranty saying that it covered 'everything'. Of course, you can guess what happened when we called about the heater. Of course, it was not covered. ( and the sticky drivers side electric window is not covered either). Anyway, we explained to the guy that sold us the WJ that the heater had been like this since day one and what could he do to help us out (when we took it for a test ride I tried the heater, I thought it started to get warm and as it was 30 degrees outside I shut it right off). Right on the spot he agreed to take care of it. We left the vehicle there and can pick it up in a day or two.

I was very impressed with his display of good will (especially considering the price we negotiated for the truck). I was expecting a bit of a fight and maybe at the end a couple of hundred bucks from him as a gesture. It was a huge relief that he just took ownership of the problem like that.

Cheers guys

Right on, alway's nice to have someone else tear into the right side of the dash. Does your's have the manual heater controls or the automatic? If it's all auto make sure your blend doors are still working after you pick it up.
