Locked Diff?
I have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 L, QuadraTrac. I just got this Jeep in Decemeber. It is the first 4wd I've owned, and I love it!
It is a high miler, but runs great. But a couple of problems have surfaced It seems my rear diff is locked. Whenever I turn a corner, the inside rear tire chirps like it is sliding. It also seems to "bind" when I make a sharp turn , at slow speeds, like pulling into a parking spot. The Jeep will actually come to a stop unless I give it some gas when I turn.
I checked the fluid level in the diff, and it is up. I asked the guy I bought it off of, he owned it for 6 years. He said it always did that.
Is this normal for a Jeep? If not, any ideas why my diff seems to be locked? Or am I way off, and it is something else completely? Transfer case?
Second problem is the Over Drive. It has the button on the dash to turn on/off the Over Drive. Mine seems to randomly turn off the Over Drive. Especially if I let up on the gas. But if I push the button, it comes on again. So it does work, it just seems to turn off at random. Suggestions? Loose wire somehwere? Bad solenoid? Where do I look? On the tranny?.
Any help would be appreciated. I am fairly mechanical when it comes to cars, but this is my first 4wd.

Sounds ike your Quadratac transfer case is acting up. I recently bought a '97 Grand Cherokee that was doing the same thing. After some research, I found that the quadratrac is prone to failure. What it's doing is after it it gets warmed up, it starts putting more power to the front end which is never a good thing on bare pavement especially when taking tight corners (like in a parking lot). Essentially your Jeep is locked in 4 wheel drive.
My fix? Replaced the transfer case with a Command Trac. Gives 2 wheel drive option which saves a lot on the fuel too. If you get a t-case out of a jeep of the same year, it should be a straight swap out (doesn't have to be out of a Grand Cherokee either).
Either replace it or have it repaired (replace will probably be cheaper if you get one out of a scrap yard). You could do some serious damage to the front end if it's left like it is. Lot's of info out there on the net. And there's Jeep forums where you'll actually get answers to your questions too.

The viscous coupler has gone bad in the transfer case. It usually costs $600 to replace. Very common problem, any tranny shop can fix it for you, or like previous guys have said, go with the disengageable unit. I rebuilt mine, but I have the means to do so, being I work in the trade.

personally if there was something wrong then you would not be having the problem as the coulpler and rear diff LSD would not engage and it would free wheel easily into your parking spot. chirping of the tires is normal and should happen especially under power as it tends to lock up. be happy it is working as it should :lol:

Before you run off to replace the T/C or viscous coupler, when was the last time the axle was flushed? Get the wheel up in the air and pull on it top and bottom to see if it moves, the bearing could be worn. If the axle had been flushed recently was there enough friction modifier put in? Problem may be solved with a couple of ounces of FM from the stealership.
Usually if the viscous coupler is going it will be one of the front tires that start to skip.

Let's defy logic, the VC is always "slightly" engaged and if it is starting to go one of the first indicators is when turning one of the front wheels will start to hop/ skip. You can test your VC by going and doing some figure 8's in the dirt and you'll feel it if it's going. It will do it in AWD or 4lo.
He stated that it is the rear wheel doing this and that usually means either a bearing is going or if it "growls" a bit while turning then it needs more FM put in.
