Default lift question

With a 97 grand cherokee limited lifted 3 1/2 " do you have to change the transfer case from,"( I believe I have a NV249)" to NV231. I think the lift kit is from Rubicon Express. Also is it normal to have a bit of play in the shaft that goes into the steering pump, about a 1/4" or 1/2" Thanks for any reply.

No you don't have to change your T/C.
You may have to get a different front driveshaft if the angles start to get extreme. If your DS has a CV joint on it it's a good idea to replace it with one that has u-joints as your getting near the max for it. Usually around 4" of lift you'll start binding the CV joint. Also with the 249 don't run without the front driveshaft, they have a tendency to roll if it's not there even when the transmission is in park. Earlier years it was fairly common but the later ones still occasionally do it.

Power steering pump shouldn't have that much play in it. Surprised the bearings aren't howling loud enough to wake the dead.

What bearings are you referring to.

The one that the shaft is connected to so it can spin.
