replacing oil pan on cherokee xj
I got told that my threads were stripped on my oil pan. Now I've been quoted between $500-$800!!!!! to fix!! Is it possible to replace myself? They say that the engine has to be lifted, but some othere people seem to think it will come right out. Does anyone know?
I have a used pan from a wrecker for $60 and a new gasket for $45. Seems alot cheaper!!!!

From what I remember, yes you need to slightly lift that engine. Correct me if I am wrong, pretty sure you need to..... This is not a backyard fix, if you are new to turning wrenches. It's easy enough to do, just make sure nothing foreign gets in the engine when you attempt it.
I can't say I'm familiar enough with the Jeep yet on whether or not you have to lift the engine, but I've worked on a few others over the years. Buy yourself a tap and die set, go up one size on the bolt and that will fix 'er. If the bolt ends are still stuck in the block, you'll need a set of "easy-outs" to get them out. Most decent hardware/tool shops will have both. Canuck Tire is a good choice. It's the same thing they'd do in a shop. Don't cheap out on low price/low quality tools though, you'll regret it later and will have wasted your money. I've heard of some guys using heli-coils to repair stripped threads, but I'm not really keen on them myself. Okay for a quick fix, but nothing beats a new set of threads. Like the ZJDougy said, make sure you clean it up good.
Even if you do have to lift the engine, a cherry picker will make short work of it. Some rental shops have them if you don't own one. Nothing that a buddy and a case of beer can't do in an evening and a hell of a lot cheaper if you're at all mechanical minded. Plus you'll have some indispensable tools for future use. Best of luck!

oversize drain plugs are available at any parts joint .. if you've totally torn the threads out, and this might seem ghetto but it works if your old pan is in otherwise good shape .. ie not rusted out and seeping .. cut a 4 inch square section around the drain plug out of a your wrecker pan and a 3 inch section out of the old pan with a cut off wheel, clean them up really good with solvent and mig or braize the patch on .. while you're at tack some diamond plate on the bottom of the sump for a budget skid plate or at least puncture insurance
it's easier to lift the truck on stands and lower the front axle, if you're real lucky it'll droop enough without loosening control arms .. but keep an eye on the caliper hoses
while you got the pan off replace the rear main seal
