I am posting this thread to kinda get the word out, I was wondering if anyone uses regularly any sort of radio in there Jeep? (not radio station, radio communication)

I was looking and most people use CB, but there's an argument to use HAM radios or various other types i can't remember. I think HAM you need a licence but i'm not entirely sure.

Any Radio Experts out there I can pick your brain about radios?

You'll find that most guys will have CBs in their jeeps for the most part with an external antenna. Some people will also carry FRS radios with them. But the standard is usually CB. Cobra makes a nice one that all the control are in the handpiece.

The most important thing is to set up the antenna with a swr meter.

I did see that CB on amazon, if i was to get one that would be it for sure. Probably mount it under the dash on the drivers side and mount the mic.

This SWR Meter Im not sure what it is? I have a multi meter, not sure if that would work. I've never heard of setting up antennas before, electrical and soldering is my forte but antennas is not apart of that.

No clue what a FRS radio is, I am super concerned about the whole idea of radios i know alot of people know what CB is. But i am afraid of buying a radio that nobody uses anymore and is kind of a waste of my time and money.

CBs are not a waste of money in the jeep world. SWR is standing wave ratio and has to do with antenna length adjustment. I have a meter. So if you end up putting in a CB you could come out to my place and I'd help you install and set it up.

Passenger side is better for mounting the CB due to space behind the dash.

Would be worth a look for sure. Need to save the cash for that, I got so many mods i want to do I can't really decide what I want to do first to be honest. But i think CB should be pretty high on that list because it's really important tool.

You're correct that it should be high on your list. It's a good communication and safety tool on the trails.

My only biggest fear is say that i get stuck somewhere, if CB is no longer a used form of communication its kind if taking up space.

Hey guys, for what its worth, CB is still used. I can't see it being obsolete. You gotta get the radio paired with the antenna which just means getting a real good ground with the least resistance using a multimeter in the Ohms scale range. I've also used 2 Way radios which have an amazing range but can get quite pricey.

You shouldn't be scared about being stuck and alone.

The number one biggest rule when wheeling is NEVER EVER EVER EVER GO ALONE!!!! and that doesn't mean take a passenger you with you.

You should be with at least one other vehicle.Preferably two.

As far as CB being obsolete. That's not too likely to happen. Truckers still use them as does the offroad community.

the only thing that is visible in the jeep is the handset and all the controls are built into it.

Again the biggest thing is to set up the antenna to match the CB with an SWR meter. And ohm meter with show you that you have a good ground and continuity. But the SWr meter will get your antenna length tuned to the correct length.
