I had a 97' TJ 2.5ltr. 3 things come to mind.
01) The TPS, Throttle Position Sensor went a few times and would not let it start. But then it would. Replaced it and started good!
02} The Crankshaft Sensor is also one of the things that could be intermittent.
03) There is a sensor that stops fuel from backing into the tank from the fuel rail when you turn the key off. This would not stop it from starting eventually but would stop it from starting immediately after shut down. Cold start would be better as you would be on the auto choke and would push more fuel into the fuel rail. I found that turning the key off after it spins a few times then turning it back on sometimes would force a start. Not always though!
The TPS and CSPS should show up with a code check. Not sure about the other one.

Good Luck.

Thanks Airdale for the information. Do you have any idea why it would not be getting spark. Apparently when there is spark it starts just fine so i'm told. The batery is fully charged.

liz0167, both the TPS and the CSPS will shut off power if they do not work. And both have the aggravating option of being intermittent before they totally break down!
These are the two that i would be looking at initially.

There is also the possibility of a main lead wire that could be damaged with intermittent shorting or a main fuse that could be intermittent and a garage would need to check a few things to determine.

If you know anyone with a code reader or a local garage, they should be able to check it quickly. Only draw back is that if the sensors are working when they check, you may not get a code!
