x model was available 2007-2009. In 2010 they renamed the X model to the Sport model and added the Sport S model as well. more at Jeep.ca

You've got some great responses from other members. Funny, I too have a 06 Civic that once end of life will be replaced with a 2DR JK :banana: I've been watching ever since my wife got her DD JKU. I tried the link, didnt see a JK on the site, gone, maybe sold....maybe you bought it ??

You've ID what you want to use the Jeep for which is the first step, next is trim level. I agree with Mr White, Rubi if money is not an issue. Consider the options, most X or Sport (which replaced the X in 2009 i think) will be hit and miss with things like keyless, power windows and doors, colth seats, and even the dual top packages. Also, keep an eye on the tire size and rims, NOT all Jeeps come with the nice 18" aloys. Except for the Rubi, all Jeeps come with D30 and D44, and either 3.21 or 3:73's.

Go to the Saraha, most are optioned out with A/C power windows ect...and nice wheels and rims ect...you pay a bit more.

The Rubi is well, the Rubi, again watch the creature comforts, you will pay a premo for the D44 front and rear, the 4:10s -w- lockers, 4:1 T case and elec-disco.

Pre-owned usually nets more Jeep for less money, but not new and vice versa.

Best thing to do is plenty of homework, ask lots of questions, and then make a decision on what best suits you, you can't loose you will get a Jeep.

Silly? Depends on what you want. I have seen base 4x4 x's on some hairy trails, and I have taken my 2010 Rubicon Unlimited on some hairy trails where it really did well. I like my 2010 because often my work means driving on roads that ...well, they aren't roads but I enjoy my comfort. If I knew then what I know now...I would have searched out a 2 wheel drive and put aftermarket off road everything for only a few more dollars and a lot more time.
You asked for education, so try google-ing "jeep jk owners discussion". or "jeep jk tech." just be aware that some jk-forums are filled with biased information because some forum owners only allow sponsors' products to be mentioned.
I can't tell you much about other models except old cherokees, but my 2010 unlimited Rubicon has only one "downside" for me. The Rock-trac transfer case is not really a great one for poor weather hiway driving. If you want a good transfer case for commuting on winter roads, the command-trac or NV 241 allows you to keep it in 4 hi at hiway speed even if the roads are providing some good traction.

Also new 2010 jk's should be going 0 interest soon.

Great point on the Rubis transfercase. Folks rave about the 4:1 ratio, and the final crawl of 73:1 (off the top of my head folks, I know it's up there)
To your point, on a snow covered 401 I have run in 4HI for my commute home, all 65Kms. However, the command trac is 2:73:1, and when you need the 4LOW, its a better application in this example. Hmmm.
All comes down to what you will be doing with the Jeep 98% of the time.

Just my two cents, but I've got 3.73's and the d35. I'm turning 33" MTR's and wheel the crap out of my jeep. If you stick to 31" tires you can take on pretty much anything you'll "happen to come across" and have some fun.

From what it sounds like above you do not need a rubicon. That being said, I wish I had started with one cause now I'm putting a Ford 8.8 axle in the back so I can go to bigger tires.

Most of this thread assumes you are planning on a TJ/CJ/YJ/JK, but you can also do a lot and have a lot of fun with the XJ (Cherokee) or the WJ/ZJ (Grand Cherokee). I even know a guy who hardcore wheels his Commander.

Liberty is decent but not really great for mods and don't even bother with the Compass/Patriot
