Posted earlier about the viscous coupler problem in my NP249J...thanks for
all the info...
But I'm thinking of changing over to the NP231 or NP242. I need to know
which is better( if at all) and what years are compatiable with mine. It
would be used for light off roading and a lot of highway driving.

1995 GCL 5.2L 46RH NP249 TC
What years will bolt into my ride? (I know I have to swap the input shafts

The full time four wheel drive mode of Selec-Trac would be useful for nasty
weather highway driving. From the reports, it is as robust as the NP231 for
off-road use, although it does have more moving parts. (More moving parts =
more potential points of failure.) From what you are saying about amount of
off road versus on road use, you want the NP242.

The 242 has more vicous clutch packs, the 231 does not. 231 is generally
cheaper, but the 242's full time 4wd could be nice.

The 242 has more vicous clutch packs, the 231 does not. 231 is generally
cheaper, but the 242's full time 4wd could be nice.

Afaik, Selec-Trac is a mechanical or gear system, with no viscous clutch
pack. You can find out for sure if you have an owner's manual. Does
Selec-Trac use a "special" fluid that has to be changed all the time, or
Dexron ATF?
"The chain driven NP242 is a full time transfer case with a 48/52 torque
split front and rear."

"Torque split" means that there is a center differential, not a clutch pack.
There are web sites that say it has a clutch pack, but you can't believe
