East The Journey of the Soft Top

So I said I would share the story of the journey we had (my gf and I) and thats what this thread is for, also a question about the new soft top and some input on it also.

So the trip was to sell the top to Michel347, I got home at 12am friday night, slept 4ish hours got up at 4am and left at 430am to drive off to Montreal! Trip was aprox 520kms one way, so to start off I was tired and driving up.

Gas was doing well, had the hard top on. Was doing around 11.2L/100kms or 20.6MPG, doing about 110km/h - 120km/h. So I arrive at Michel347's house (got a little lost first he helped us out) Took the top off made sure everything was in order (he showed me his wicked camper I thought it was really cool) Very nice guy, everything was in order except the rain was getting pretty bad. We had a pretty bad spit on the way in but with the hard top on it was no issue at all.

So we hit the road as soon as possible, needed to get back to toronto to buy the new soft top from Just Jeeps before they closed at 4pm. So we hoofed it, on our way out of montreal thank god the traffic was moving because it poured and we had no top! Interesting we didn't get wet! But the review mirror and the inside of the windshield got wet go figure. So in and out of storms it wasn't to bad of a trip temp dipped down to 11C and by the time we got back to toronto it was around 16C so not to bad. BUT the fuel milage was horrible.. We went from 11.2L/100kms - 20.6MPG to 14.8L/100kms or 16MPG! So we had to fuel up twice before heading back to toronto while going to montreal only required 1 pit stop.

We finally made it to Just Jeeps store at 3:55pm just in time! From the pictures you can see the box was pretty big, had to bungie it. So now we've been awake for 12 hours by this point, we can't park the jeep with no top on it.. so we had to assemble it.

Being as tired and frustrated as we were it took a very long time to try and decrypt how a soft top worked (we had never seen one before had no clue how it worked) Started the top at 6pm finished at 12am didn't even eat dinner! Still wasn't fully on (didn't attach the header first duh!)

So we had to goto a birthday party for my gf's niece the following sunday. So we went and so we had to keep the front in the sun rider position because we didn't clamp it correctly and it wasn't reaching. Yeah.. it snowed and rained and all of that. Got down to 2 degrees that day, this is may 12th!

Finally got home put the top on correctly it's tight as a drum and finally good. Just need to get some more foam tape to fix the seals (kinda boched the one that came with it).

So that's the story! Here are some Pictures!

Now I am having one problem with the soft top and was wondering if anyone had solution, the door jam part of the side windows don't seem to be co-operating! Was wondering if anyone had any clue why it's doing this and how to fix it? Both the drivers side and passenger side are doing this, just don't stay uniform on the top for some reason but the bottom is fine.

What a journey! Glad you made it on time. Yes often going west direction is a lot worst on gas because of main wind direction, plus being topless you get more turbulances.

About your top, the front retainer of the side window is not properly seated into the door frame channel.

Unzip the side window almost completely and reposition the retainer into the channel, when inserting you will feel that it needs to wrap around when pushing it. Once properly seated then zip the side window.

Look at 4:38 in that video:

Thanks, I thought there was something I was missing.. But if you or anyone else wanted to know why I wanted to switch to a soft top and gave up the hard top to do so. There's a great video to show why, I don't have a house to be able to store a hard top and use a thin soft top. So this soft top I have on now, is actually triple layered, super heavy duty. I also find the jeep itself bumps around a little more and feels alot lighter. I heard somewhere if you order hard top they put in stiffer springs then if you get the soft top, ether way it's pretty fun I feel like I have alot of control.

I do have another question for ya.. My top is a little more complex then this one is, but when you want to go into sun rider mode you flip the front back do you need to pull the rear sails out in order to clip the front header back down? Or is it only the initial setup it needs to stretch it or something? Also the weather stripping that came with the top is garbage it's whistling, so I went and bought some truck weather stripping from Home Depot for $15, a huge 30 foot roll it's 1 - 1/4" and it's used to line the outside rim of the truck to seal the covers on the back. Figured it should work, I haven't put it on yet though.

Hi, you shouldn't need to unclip the rear sail, but from what I read, these premium tops can take a while to stretch, but I guess you should be fine without.

About the weather stripping, I'm not sure to where it applies from your writting, may be a picture ?

Under the header bar theres some weather stripping and it needs to be replaced on mine because I didn't put it on very well. It makes a whistling noise when i drive down the road so I know if it rains waters will get into it.
