Default Looking at a '89 XJ

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and new to the Jeep community as well. Some info on my is I'm 19 years old, I live in New Brunswick and I've be into vehicles and motors for the past 6 years. Now I've been looking for a Jeep for some time now but haven't had much luck. I originally wanted a TJ but there a bit out of my budget and I'm not fawned of the YJ so I started looking at ZJ and XJ modes and started to like them more. Now I'm driving a 1999 Honda Prelude and am trying to trade for a Jeep and have had a few hits but the most interesting is this one:

1989 Jeep Cherokee - Moncton Pickup Trucks For Sale - Kijiji Moncton
And thats not 3.3 million Kms its only .3 million :P

Just wanted to ask some Jeep guys about it, like what should I be looking for on a older XJ? What are some flaws that are common for older XJs?

I kinda want a daily driver/ weekend warrior type of rig.

A few months ago my buddy was looking to trade in his lude for a Jeep, found him a sick clean XJ in Fredericton but he never followed thru with it...

But yeah it looks pretty good and the price isn't too bad, id check the rust spots on it since NB can be brutal especially if he heads up around the north shore ever... and see just how bad it is, take a look Under it for damage, he seems to be up front about the dings and dents, and the brakes and muffler so you shouldn't find anything but it never hurts to look, make sure the lift kit is in good condition...

Id it for a spin, make sure you check out the transfer case and make sure its operating properly in 4 low... and isnt making any sounds...

Thats awful high price for an 89 xj, my neighbour just sold a 92 for $500.. with 175,000km front floor was so so, still had rocker panels and wheel wells look very good. Autom. stock. So an 89 at $2500. thats been offroading.. bite much in my book. Do as the above fellow said, ck it out on ur roadtest. My 89 xj stock std paid $3200. in 2001 never was offroaded.

Yeah as long as the drive train is decent and body isn't rotted out I'm happy, I'm going to be doing some moderate off roading and alot dirt roads and trails so I dont want something I'll be scared to scratch up a bit.

I confronted him about the price and he said that the lift was like $3000 and the tires and rims were something like $1000 and the jeep was worth $2500 but i see what your saying cause I was a bit skeptical on the price aswell. I asked him about what he was thinking for a trade but he didnt reply so i offer my Prelude for his jeep, tires and $2000 but still no reply...

I aparently live in the wrong part of the country cause 2500 is cheap up here, somethin to watch for in older ones is oil leaks depending on the mileage I just bought (well traded my pickup for) a 1990 and found out that the oil leak the previous owner didn't know about because it only shows up after it's been driving for about 20min and they bought it and is sat, was not a small leak but all the gaskets need replaing in my engine. Also make sure that it is the 4.0L and not the 3.8L or whatever it was they came with prior to the ninety's because I think they came with a couple engines in that year (I could be wrong feel free to correct me if I am) (I also can't view the add as it is gone) . The 4.0L is an all around great engine though.

3000$$ for a lift?!?? That's one expensive lift. And when you sell a car, you rarely make money on the mods you put in....
