Im 17 and I'm getting into Jeeps/Wheeling as a hobby.

Im looking to buy a used YJ or TJ and I was wondering what upgrades/modifications would you people reccomend to get on the trails?

Im on a budget like most, so what are some kep upgrades/mods i should plan on doing?

Thanks for your time, -Andy

Hi Andy,
Start with decent tires, you'll be amazed at where your YJ will take you stock. When your out just be aware of where your driving and don't go where you know you can't.
You don't have to spend tons of money to be wheelin in your Jeep. Tires and common sense go a long ways.

X2 on the tires and baby steps Dan

The best upgrade/mod available is a well kept rig. No sense putting lifts, armor and a winch on a POS. Buy a solid platform and get to know it and what it can do before you drop money on ill conceived mods.

Thanks for the advice guys, So my plan for now is get a good running Jeep, putting some treads on it and a winch maybe? could be helpful.

What would be a decent tire size that would fit/clear a stock TJ or YJ?

Check out the forums for the TJ/YJ's, owned one CJ way back when I was your age, other than that all the Jeeps that I've owned have been XJ's, ZJ's, and WJ's.

Anything over 30-31" will rub.
31" with 2.5" RC lift is a nice combo imo.

I'm sure that when you get your Jeep that you'll find there are more important things than winches right off the bat. lol
First off find out what/ where you like to wheel. Then if you seriously want to build it up then make up a priority list for add-on's.
When you get to that stage there are lot's of knowledgable people around to help you spend your money wisely.

yea my first must have was a shovel lol... not so affective in the swampy mud... but much cheaper than a winch, requires alot more work, but can still get you out in a bind...

tow straps are the poor mans winch, hook to a buddy and give it a go... winches are for the solo man that hates to rely on others...

After all these years 3 things I always take with me, a shovel, a 6' wrecking bar, and a good set of tire chains.
Any one of the three have saved my butt more than once.
