to swap out 4cyl or not

O.K. need some tech help.

My 88 YJ has the inline 4 cyl engine and I am getting some valve noise. I replaced the valve cover gasket and checked all the rockers, one seems to be looser than the rest. Could be push rod trouble or lifter, noise seems to come and go. So the question I have is:

If I take out the 4 cyl I was thinking that I might up-grade to a 6 cyl. So here come the questions....will a stock jeep 6 cyl mount to the 5 speed manual tranny ? Did they make a V-6 or am I looking for an in-line 6? Will the tranny I have mount up to anything else for a motor?

I had an older CJ5 and it had a small block chev 350 installed (nice unit) however I seem to remember that there was an adapter ring of some kind between the motor and tranny.

Would it be easier to find another unit and swap out all the running where do I stop?

The YJ only has 120 k on it and is in very good shape, new soft top, seat are excellent, body in very good shape, good rubber (was planning on some sort of a lift body or suspension in the future, nothing wild she is a daily driver).

Any helpful advise is welcome.

Puff

In my opinion , all in all, i would go for the I6, and no they didnt make a v6.

i am also pretty sure that an I6 would go on well with the tranny. Going with the I6 would give you the power to put down when you need it, not that the 4 isnt any good , but the 6 is better hands down.

anyway man, all the best
hope your decisions end up working well.

i'd say get your moneys worth from the 4 cyl.... check/adjust valves and timing as nessasary and leave it for now! work on a good axles, springs etc... once the 4 banger gives up you will love the I6 swap.

I'll tell you 1 thing, swapping the 4 for the six, upside is you'll get twice the power and the same gas milage, downside is that you wont want to stop there, There is no stopping....... Good luck

Re: to swap out 4cyl or not

if you want a 6cyl personnaly sell the 4cyl to but a 6cyl because you will have to change everything (change the location of the engine mount, the ax-15 transmission, new computer, different input for the np231 t-case, relocalise all the lines like fuel and brake and a new exhaust from headers to muffler
