rear diff
 

how do you tell the diff dana 35 or dana 44. not sure what I just picked up. new axle has larger shafts. :beerchug:

The D35 is more oval looking then the D44. The D44 aslo has a metal filler cap. Some were on the axle housng there should be a stamp to ID what it is.

I found this link helpfull, click on the left picture with all the diff covers.

Poor you.I have a 35 too and I want to replace it sooo bad.
If you don't go on trails,you'll be fine,but if you do,be very careful,you can spin an axle easily.
I'm holding off on my lift kit and other things until I can swap my rear end.

I don't understand why everyone calls down the 35s', I've been wheeling with them for years and I've never destroyed one. I bent an axle in my 35 last year but that was just a very green spotter and some bad judgement on my part from deviating from the proper line.
If you drive to the capabilities of your gear you won't have problems.

I call em down,because they aren't really meant for the trails,I've had 2 buddies break an axle,
They are a weak link in the drivetrain.
As for a daily driver,it's great.
gimme a d44 or ford 8.8 any day

never broke a 35 wheeling yet just doing a burn out with 33's. Thought I lucked out and got a 44 on the cheap cause shafts are thicker,and it has c clip to hold axle in. Oh well got 4:10's and new axles now.

Well there's a perfect example of overdriving a 35 for ya!
The WJ get's wheeled hard and I keep up with my buddies that have 44's and larger to. Pick your line, take your time and the 35 will get you where you want to go.
Next mod for the trail queen is a set of 4.56 and probably Eaton lockers F/R.

Yeah I hear ya 04WJGuy,That's what I do,take it easy,not too much spinout,or try to apply too much HP to get unstuck,but still,They are sensitive so I'd prefer something more heavy duty.Like your avatar says"chrome won't get ya home" and that applies to mods that are more cosmetic and non essential parts.
I'm planning on doing a huge mod,but I want to do it right the first time(also gotta scrape enough $ together),so patience is required.But it's very hard lol.

I know what you mean, my WJ is on a 2 year budgeting plan. Unless I win obscene amounts of money tonight on 6/49. Then it goes in the shop tomorrow. :)
