Power steering pump bearing noise?
First post in over 6 years? Wow. MY 94 is just back on the road after being parked for 2 years. Motor started squealing after a couple hours of driving. From the p/s pump. At low idle it’s pretty quiet, sounds like bearings maybe clicking around, rev it up and gets pretty screechy. I see the pulley, when I stand off to the side, looks a bit out of whack, not perfectly aligned with the rest of the serpintiny stuff. I changed the water pump a long time ago and I mightnot have put it all back together straight. Steering is fine, no noise when cranked all the way left or right, just the clicking and screeching. ANybody had this problem? Not too keen on driving it for fear of some thing seizing up. TIA, Shawn |
Re: Power steering pump bearing noise?
Are you sure the noise is coming from the p/s pump and not the idler bearing? It might just be air in the system, I would suggest going round all the things the belt goes round with a stethyscope to be certain where the noise is comming from.

Re: Power steering pump bearing noise?
Well now I know. Eons ago when I replaced the water pump, I tightend ---- up too tight. I loosened the tensioner up a few turns and the noise went away. Very humbling. Thanks for the reply |
