Odometer Questions - 1988 YJ

Hi Everyone,

Brand new here and about to realize a long held dream, buy a Jeep and fixing her up into something special.

The Jeep I am buying - a 1988 YJ (4.2 - 6 cylinder) has only 130,000 KM on the odometer. I am realistic enough to know this isn't correct.

The MTO has an Odometer reading from 2007 of 210,000.

So what is most realistic here:
  1. The Odometer has been replaced
  2. The Odometer has been tampered
  3. The Odometer has rolled over
  4. Something I haven't considered

How high will the odometer go in a 1988 YJ? Someone mentioned it might only go as high as 300,000.

Now I realize this may have rolled over 3 times, but does that mean 900,000 or 3 Million?

Love some feed back here.

Cheers,

:3gears:

Re: Odometer Questions - 1988 YJ

Greetings,
WELCOME Fritzcat (fk). Hmmmm....interesting conundrum. Have you asked the seller about the discrepency? Is this a private sale or a dealer? How much are you paying and if a higher than average price does the seller base this on the "low" mileage? Is the vehicle in good shape or will you have to pour a pile of $$ into it. Get a GOOD mechanic to go over it before parting with your $$.
I've never heard of odometers rolling over at 300K. I would think if there are 6 digits in the display (minus the tenth's) the odo would register to 999,999 and THEN roll over. If only 5 digits, then it would roll over at 99,999.
Sooooo....Odo replaced? Possibly, but why? (ask seller). Odo tampered? Possibly and is a case for MTO.
Your call sir.
Peter.

Re: Odometer Questions - 1988 YJ

Thanks for the response Peter. The current owner of the Jeep picked it up in trade and now wants to unload it, so not a lot of history there.

What I am paying is about 2/3 of comparable Jeep I have seen on the market. The moment I saw 130K, I knew the math didn't work out. If for some reason it was correct, that meant it sat for a long time somewhere and that was just as damaging.

I am going into this with eyes open. It is meant to be a part time project and to have a little fun.

Still has me wondering though...

Cheers,

if the drive train is good and you want to fix it up who care about the km's on it. I had a xj with 314 000. Frame rotted out so I scraped it it still ran great.
