88 yj - no guts

New to this forum but got a question and hoping someone has solved this problem before. I own an 88 YJ and have been driving it for about 2 years. Love the Jeep only thing is I start driving into the wind and I might as well be driving through a river for the power that it has. Currently there is a 4 Cyl in it my only solution right now is to drop a new engine into it. BUT before I do that does anyone have any idea what might be wrong that might not cost quite so much.

Thanks

88 4cyl = low power even new.

The only way your going to get anymore "power" out of the 4 banger would be by regearing the axles to give you the extra push. Unfortunately you'll usually start to sacrifice mileage when you do this.
Another thing you might try is find a good speed shop and see if they can find a cam that will help the situation, might help a bit but the 4 slow is exactly that.
