4 or 6 banger?

Hey everyone.
New to the site but not really to older jeeps.
Sold my Willys CJ2A a few years back and am now looking at a yj.
I have done some reading on both motors, but would like some opinions.
I am looking at 87-89 yj's. Most have the carbed 6 cyl.
So my question comes down to are these carbed inline 6's that bad?
Should i just wait for a TBI 4 cyl?
Will pretty much just be a summer toy, parts store runner ect, till i have some cash to play with.
Thanks
John

i had an 87 with the carbed 4.2 5 spd and 31 x 13.5 and i think that it sucked balls

Re: 4 or 6 banger?

Besides sucking in the ball department, what are they like for reliability?
The 87 i am looking at has 160k on it.
Are they knowen for lots of problems or issues besides lack of power?

I think you are best to get a FI 4.0 litre they realy are the best motor.

i have a 1990 jeep yj and it had the 4.2 carbed other than the carb not wanting to work properly because of the computer controlled portion of it, i didnt have any issues with it. my brother has a inline 4 TBI and its causing him lots of problems. i agree with mattz i would also go with the 4.0 litre fuel injection.

Re: 4 or 6 banger?

I have a '91 with a 4.0 and I'm sure that's the way to go.
Every parts Jeep I ever bought had a 4.2 in it, either ran ruff or didn't run at all and few people ever came looking for engine parts. Take from that what it's worth.

Check out the article on this in the last Peterson Offroad Mag. I read some of it, I believe they recommended 87-up only and the 4.0 engine. But this article was awsome it went through what transfer case, diffs. engine, trany etc. too look for.

Re: 4 or 6 banger?

Thanks for the info. Think i will keep looking for a 4.0L
I have found some cheap 4.2l but like mentioned they either aren't running or "needs work".
The article in Petersons had some good info in it for what to look for or avoid.

Re: 4 or 6 banger?

deffs get a 4.0l fuel injected they are indistructable and have plenty of tourque for those hill climbs. i have a 1995 yj with the 4l with 277000 km and it still runs like a champ! i get about 300-400km on a tank with 33x12.5 tires so not to bad on fuel.
best 5000 dollars ive ever spent!

Re: 4 or 6 banger?

Can't say from personal experience. I've only had 6 cyl., but an friend has a 4 banger and wishes he had a 6. He says that it is ok but looses power on hills and is pretty anemic if pulling something.

Re: 4 or 6 banger?

I have a 94YJ with a 4L HO 5 speed and if u can find one I would take it over the 4banger or an older carb. YJ. It runs good and doesn`t break down. Find urself a 1993,94 or 95 the last year it was built..
