Got 3:07 with 33in thornbirds in yj with 5spd and a inline 6 (258). What would be better gears. Will be driven on road aswell.

Hi there,

I've had 33's on both a YJ and a TJ and I found that 3:73 gears worked pretty well for both on and off road usage. Hope that helps a bit.

If your going for better gearing try to locate at least a rear dana44 w/4.10 gears and you can regear the front or if your lucky pu a d44 for the front too (d44 are a stronger axle than the d30/35's). Finding a couple from a ruby would be nice, with lockers. I don't know how accessible they are in your area.The 4 cy's came with d30 and 35's with 4.10 gears thats another way to go if u can locate an old yj

Agreed and not to be an A$$ all though I am, Google gear calculator and it will help you through some of your questions. A good one is www.4lo.com they have more options that will allow you to make an educated choice based on now and possible future tire growth. It would be smarter to say go with the 4.10's or larger now if you think you may go to say a 35 or larger tire in the future.

Better yet, do the ultimate mod to it and trade that thing for a Samurai =)

Thanks man, I lover her to. The nice part is it is built to do the big stuff, but it is small enough to do the tight stuff as well. I Would love to make it rear steer as well for the even tighter stuff.

mine was a 2.5 but same power.
i had 4.10s
i ran 35s it lugged at hwy speeds but kepped the rpms down
i ran 30s and it done well over all but the rpms were screaming on the hwy

so 33s and 4.10s sounds liek a good combo. easier to find then 3.73 im sure unless your going new but its not worth it
get a cheap jeep with a 2.5 and swamp it over.

like previous ly said, if on a tight budget go for 4 cyl YJ`s diffs ...they have 4:10 from factory direct fit ....if you have better budget get a dana 44 rear diff .....

3:55 would put you back to stock. Personally I'd go 4:10 or higher.

I got 35" thornbirds on my yj and im running 4:88 gotta love the torque, does pretty good with highway speeds too

Here's a thought. The zj's are coil sprung at both ends so attachments should be usable on a tj. Many of the zj's have 3;73 gears and are also rear disk. There might be an issue with front driveshafts due to the short pinion on the tj's but not a big problem. I'll have to throw someone under a zj with a measuring tape.

you'd be better off by dropping a ford 8.8 find the right one and you'll get disk brakes&a 4:10 gear set

been looking locally with no luck. found s10 drive drive. Just need to find SM block.
