towing jeep
Hi everyone, my first post, looking for info. I am planning on towing 97 jeep tj on up coming vacation. The manual say's to put transfer case in neutral and trany in gear( doesn't say what gear), why? Why not neutral on trany too? Also does towing still ring up miles on odometer? And steering lock is passive so do I not engage and tie steering wheel? Any info on towing appreciated thanx.

Re: towing jeep
Hey! crj
I tow my 99 tj around all the time behind my motorhome with no issuses, I do have to leave the key in the ignition (otherwise the steering locks) and then put the trans (5 speed) in gear... dosen't matter what gear... not sure why it has to be in gear.... No mileage is put on the speedo when towing this way. I will guess that you are going to tow 4 down (flat towing with a tow bar and no dollie) so do not tie the steering wheel it (tj) will follow behind easily! Dave. |
Re: towing jeep
thanks dave. Yes the intention was to tow with tow bar only. Glad to hear mileage does'nt accumulate while towing. About the key thing, a 180 turn of steering wheel locks it even with key in. I assume you use accessory position and unhook the beeper for the key?

Crj
I put the switch in the position just before being "on".... I don't bother with disconnecting the beeper thing cause once the door is shut it stops...... or does it? hmmm! Don't forget that some states ( and provinces) have laws about towing that weight without having an aux braking system. Good luck! Dave. |
Re: towing jeep
dave made trial run behind pickup and everything was as you said. Perfect, thanks again for your input and yes beeper does quit with door closed.
