Canada TJ problems

well lets give this a try. im kinda new to this jeep stuff but here it goes. I have a 2005 tj unlimited that is giving my a headach, it recently toar the gear off the distributor, works off the cam gear. yes its electronic so not really a distributor, however, i had it towed to the dealer and they put a new one on and it starts and runs almost like it did before ,lol, no not really. it hesitates alittle and it will not reveve over 3500rpms . engine light on with a code of P0016 witch says the cam/crank sensors are missalighned, what has caused this and how do i fix it? even better, the dealer says I need a new cam its out between 7 and 14 degrees, How is that posible when it dosent idle ruff nore has my fuel economy chainged. Oh God please help with thease questions before i have to get rid of it,

just a shot in the dark here but if the sensors are out of line i would think improper installation of the sensor,or maybe a timing chain and gears, cant see the camshaft twisting to give a 7 to 14 degree difference

Thanks Sid for the info, how do i check to see if its the timming chain? do I have to rip the front end apart , and if so I may just replace it while its apart.

My vote is on the timing chain/sensors.

There should be a plate on the front that covers the timing chain. I seem to remember being able to take it off with a lot of busted knuckles without taking anything else off but I'd suggest you just take everything off in the way and save yourself some blood. If you really want to feel woozy after the job from blood loss donate when you're done. lol

Thank you for the advice 88XJ.I love giving blood to the cause .(WRENCHING) lol. I think if I have to take it all apart I might as well remove most of the front end. There seems to be alot of stuff in the way.

if you have never done this before i recomend buying a service manual, not that complicated of a job but you will probably need the manual for something else later on http://cgi.ebay.ca/Jeep-Wrangler-TJ-...item3cb1a66fbc

well folks just a little update , I have talked to a guy who specializes in 4x4s only. I told him what had happened and also about the dealership saying it needs a cam.LOL. He looked at me with that funny look and said BS. They are trying to soak me for a cam . The problem is that it is out a tooth on the dummy distributor and the reason that it still runs is because the computor will compensate up to a sertain amount before it wont start. Thus causing the engine light and obd code P0016 (misalighned cam/crank sensors. Who would of thunk that. anywho i guess i will pull it out and see witch way , forward or backward. Anythoughts or sugestions?

The problem you have with the camshaft synchronizer sounds like a known problem with the 05/06 TJs. The dealer will have a notice on this. It is TSB E05. Chrysler is paying for the repair in some cases. The camshaft may also need to be replaced as part of the TSB as both the gear on the CS and its counterpart on the camshaft tend to wear to the same extent. This issue is fully documented with pictures etc on jeepforum and worth a read for all TJ '05 and '06 owners. I still need to pull the CS on my Ruby to see if I am one of the unlucky ones. Good Luck -TJ-
