stalling 2000 TJ 4.0 standard.

Happened again tonight. 2000 TJ 4.0 standard.Started, stalled, started, stalled 3 times. No response from acc.pedal.Wouldn't rev up.Finally turned the key off and when I tried again started up and idled fine.A month ago it was idling in the driveway to warm up a little and when I went out it had stalled. No check engine light. No codes present or stored.

That's going to be difficult to diagnose. I don't condone changing parts in the hope that it might fix a problem, but in this case I don't see too many options. The first thing that comes to mind is the fuel pump relay. The second thing is the relay for the computer. As relays are relatively cheap and easily changed I would change them and see what happens.

I now have an update.Scanned this am when I got to work. No CEL but code P1686 present so maybe a SKIM module problem?

P1686 has to do with your ignition.

Re: stalling 2000 TJ 4.0 standard.

P1686 indicates that the PCM/ECU is not getting a signal from the SKIM (Sentry Key Imm Module).

From your initial post it sounds like it's a sporadic problem...usually runs fine, sometimes kills things.

I would start with checking the electrical connections. A bad ground on the skim or ecu can cause some funky gremlins. I have a wiring diagram I can email you if you need it(just drop me a PM).

Best of luck

Clean up those grounds, including battery terminals. I agree it sounds SKIM-related.

If you don't drive the Jeep often I'd suggest getting the battery tested, too.

Thanks for the replies.Drive everyday.Found one post about the key getting weak( I have the grey keys) so I tried the other key which is old, beat up with the brass showing and it seems to even run better. No hitches since but will be soon checking all connections to be sure. Will let you know what I find.

Hi John Smith,
Would appreciate the wiring diagram.Had a hitch again while driving.Didn't quit, just a quick buck. Then a couple days ago it stalled when I was warming up to go home .Really cold day. Also noticed static on the radio after restart.Holding the throttle would keep it running, but no idle.Still no CEL so I'm thinking something in the wiring. Also the wipers got all funky.Of course the shop is full and I haven't finished insulating mine.Perfect timing! Deep freeze!

Hi Bern

Sorry for taking so long to respond...was offline for the last month or so.

If you still need a wiring schematic, drop me a pm with your email and I''ll send you a pdf file.

Cheers and happy jeepin.
