Rock Crawl Basics
 

Okay, that's my second failed attempt. Time to ask for some advice.

There is a place I go where there is a single exposed rock. It has a flat top and sharp edges. It is roughly 45 cm tall. I have 31 in. tires on my 2000 Jeep TJ. I should be able to get one wheel on top of this right?

So I advance until my Jeep front right tire is touching the rock. I put the car into 4Hi (the light comes on and says Part Time) then I get up to 2000 rpm and slowly relax on the clutch.

The tires refuse to move. Even the back ones are not moving.

Eventually I relax the clutch too much and I smell burning. All I see is smoke all around and inside my Jeep.

I pull out the fire extinguisher and start pointing it in every direction... I fail to identify the source of a fire.

I turn it off, wait 10 minutes and drive home. Hanging my head in shame...

Uh oh... I smell the sweet smell of Victory now whenever I drive the Jeep (burning).

Should I be doing something? Change transmission fluid? Ideas ?

Sounds to me like your frying your clutch...... kinda smells like when you get a break caliper stuck.....

yes. is there something that I can do to stop damaging it or is it too late ?

I would say go to your local transmission shop...... get their opinion on it.....

Yup...4HI is only good for dirt roads and snow.

As for your clutch it might be time to think about what your going to replace it with. If its original it may be nearly wore out anyway on a 2000 depending on your KM. Chances are you heated up your flywheel real good too. These should always be replaced together or atleast have the flywheel truned down hair....I don't know if anyone even does this anymore. Labor for a shop is more expensive than a new one.

Centerforce is a great clutch, factory flywheel is ok but a HP light weight one would net you some Fast and Furious rpm spooling.

But you might be good for another 100,000KM. I leave it and see if you get any other issues, rpm raise when you punch the gas at cruising speed is a sure indication your clutch is toast, also if it don't engage untill almost full release of the pedal.

If you have a shop you trust get them to have a look, but not much they can do without tearing out your trans. If they are jerks they will tell you its toast anyway and make you think you need a new tranny as well.


We all learn by our mistakes. I almost ripped the tcase off my CJ first time I took it out.
