Removing doors

Hey I've got a 2005 TJ and I can't seem to get the doors off. I've removed the bolts on the hinges but they won't slide off. Before I pull out my hammer, does anyone have a suggestion on how to loosen the doors from the hinges?

Thanks

Re: Removing doors

Maybe put some penetrating oiol in all of the hinges and let it soak a while. Maybe they haven't come off the pins for a long time.

Re: Removing doors

That will help get them off their hinge.

Once off, do your self a favour, and apply a small amount of grease on the hinge pins when you put your doors back on, then work the grease in by open and closing the door a number of times. Not only will this help the next time you take your doors off, it will allow the doors to function smoother.

Thanks guys, any suggestion on what type of oil to use? Would WD-40 work or will that eat the paint?

Give this site a go
http://www.wd40.com/faqs/

Scroll down to were they talk about safe surfaces to use it on.

Your efforts will be paided back 10 fold, first time you go top down doors off.....and get that look of envy from a FJ at the stop light :) Only in a Jeep!

If you take your doors off regularly the paint on the hinges will suffer. I just keep mine off all summer.

Got drenched today.

Re: Removing doors

I used my Penzoil Performance grease. It's thick but flows great hot or cold and stays in place. Sounds weird but for the last 10 or so years that's all I've been using in all my 4X4 and snowmobiles. I just did my Jeep JK last monday night and what a difference.

I wish I could leave the doors of like RiponredTJ suggested, but have to park in places I'd be worried some sleeze bag will try something.

Only on holidays can I pull of the no top no door, no excusses rule.

Nice picture RiponredTJ

I use Zep45,or Wd40 will work, grab the door in a position where you can "rock"it up & down, needs lots of elbow grease the first time.Or you can use a 4x4 wood block and a jack to put a SLIGHT amount of pressure on the door combined with method above.Once off I strongly urge you to put Anti-seize on your hinge pins,it makes a world of difference.

Re: Removing doors

just bought my 04 jeep tj a few weeks ago tried to get the doors off to no avail so did some searching ending up finding a post where a guy used a floor jack and a clock of wood with a notch cut in the top for the bottom of the door to sit.

tried it myself and after a few seconds of raising the jeep the doors literally poped off the hinges.....looking at the after looks like the previous owner never took them off and/or sunk the jeep deep in water and they corroded a bit to self weld them on.

sanded down the pins nice and clean applied some lithium grease and the pop on and off no problem.

Re: Removing doors

wd40 will not hurt anything...but now that hammer is another story.

keep one nut on and work the door back and forth with lots of wd40 or krown/rust check or what ever you have on hand.

good luck

Re: Removing doors

I had to WD40 the hinges on my 01 TJ. about 18 minutes later I got a ticket for no doors. Damn BC and their **** laws.

On a better note, might be getting another TJ this weekend. Goodbye liberty!

Re: Removing doors

WD40 is the least active penetrant to use. PB Blaster @CTC is much better. once off I use vaseline to keep the hinges free. Off at the slightest lift.

i tried to take off the doors on mine and i found out that mine doesnt have the bolt to unscrew it its really odd.. i looked and it doesnt even have the hex bolt its just a circle one that someone screwed on i may have to bring it to the jeep dealership to figure it out so i can get it done.

WD 40 - 'bin there, done it, and no paint problems. Best to use the "buddy system" on remval, one guy rocking and reefing, the other to catch the sucker when she lets go or your gonna scuff the paint. I used "copper" anti sieze on my hinge pins and the pop in and out smoothly.
