new tires: help!
 

I have an 04 Columbia Edition with stock 15" with shot 31" rubber. Has a 4" body lift. Just bought this...(my first Jeep!!!!) and will be daily driver. I want it to look good, real good...32"....but do not want to sacrifice mpg :(

I know that going to 235's or 30's would look ridiculous especially with the lift so question is 31" or 32". What would appropriate tire be for the rim? Lastly, we get tons of snow/ice in winter, what is best all around for mostly pavement/ice/wet but not much at all for off roading. Thanks so much

Man, that is an almost impossible question to answer. If your worried about MPG go by a VW TDI,
a jeep regardless of what you do gets bad MPG. But to give you my opinion I'd go with BFG TA/KO's in a 33 10.50 15. The 12.50's will fit but will increase the rolling resistance and will float on snow rather than dig. Get them with a C load rating as well, a D will be much too heavy and will have a stiff sidewall which will translate into a much harsher ride. But thats just my 2 cents.

i have now found some D*ck Cepek DC-1 in 16 X 10. -25mm offset, 4.56" backspacing, recommend 315/70/16 but i don't want quite that big. Was hoping 285/75/16 or 305/70/16, both come up as 32.8" diameter but not sure width will work on rim or what size to go with anyhow. Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Can't believe the D word was *'d out...

BTW, tires i have picked are General Grabber AT2. Good price, aggressive look, good reviews for road manners and snow/ice, all of which are most important to me.

Good Year has a new true all season tire called the Wrangler Dura Trac that's worked really well in all driving conditions. It's got good looks to boot.

I used 33X12.5X15 BFG AT's, very happy. also a 4" lift

--I went to Big O.. X/T's was surprixed they aren't as noisey as I thought they would be.

--Tire store should be willing to put the jeep up on their hoist... just roll a few of the sizes you want in the wheel wells.
--This gives you a better idea of what they look like, also you might be surprised... closer to stock size might look good. Often depends on the profle and grip how big the tire acually looks.

I was considering the DuraTrac's for my 98 TJ. It is my DD and also go mudding down summer roads fairly often. My BFG AT KO's aren't great in the mud.

Anyone here had the DuraTrac's on ice/snow?
I was also considering KM2's but hear that they are not so great on ice/snow. Thoughts?

i would not run 31's in winter I tried it once and the truck is all over the place even with 4x4 on just not enough weight for the jeep on such big tires

Are you sure it's a 4" body lift? Because that is way excessive. Conventional wisdom says 1" to 1.5" max.

Uh ok, if you consider a 31" tire BIG. If your jeep is "All over the place even with 4x4 on" maybe there is something else wrong. I've been running BFG MT's (km's & KM2) all year and have never had the "all over the road" problem especially in 4x4. Nothing is good on Ice except a dedicated snow/ice tire like a Blizzack or Nokian Hakkapalita, if you have that much trouble with 31's maybe it's time to go back to stock. So here is the answer to get it over and done with and to make it simple, size does not matter.
1. MT's are great in Deep Snow,Mud,Dirt,Rocks but they tend to suck on ice if you are not careful and know what and what not to do in icy situations.If you want to run them on the ice get them studded and or siped.2. AT's are generally better in all conditions than the MT is other than Mud, AT's suck in mud,rocks but are better on ice. 3. Dedicated WINTER tires are what they are, they are for the winter, they have a really soft rubber compound that actually grips the ice, ice and snow is what they are made for, they suck in all other categories. So if your are that worried about it get winter tires.:rolleyes:
