Lifting my 2004 TJ.

I have a 2004 TJ, stock everything. I love off-roading and just sold my off road vehicle to purchase this Jeep. I plan on getting it lifted and putting on 35"s, was just wondering what size lift/lifts should I get and what type/types of lift (Body, Suspension) and what brand.

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

There are many lift kits Superlift has a very complete kit 4" , there Rough country/Tuffcountry/Rubicon express. With 35" you can do a 4" and still have lots of space for the tires without hitting anything. The main thing is look around take the kit that is complete, some will be missing parts and its doesn't pay to cut corners and end up having to buy something that could have been in the kit. Stick to a suspension lift. Going to high will make it difficult to handle in windy weather plus adding to the roll over easier on cornering. You should get a complete kit for under $1000. Cdn

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

So you would suggest the Superlift 4" kit? Also I had a few people say I should get a 3" body lift with the 4" susp lift or just a 6" susp lift with the just to keep my tires from rubbing when rock crawling. What should I be looking for in a kit? Do you have a sight you could recommend me to for the lifts as well?

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

I'd stay away from body lifts. The lower the centre of gravity on a Jeep the better.

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

Don't you have to get a yoke extender though if you go over 4" on susp? Anyone know how much those are?

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

a slip yoke eliminator is a must.i only have 2.5" susp lift and am having rear driveshaft issues.stay away from hack and tap kits.plan on spending $400.00 plus for a good one a new rear shaft will also be needed.plan on adding about $800.00 on top of your lift all lifts will raise the center of gravity. how hard do you use it offroad?is your stock susp still good or are springs getting soft?going with relocated body panels eliminates the need for driveshaft and steering corrections while maintaing closer to stock handling charicteristics and keeping cener of graity low.i wish i went this route

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

So I should get a new driveshaft for just my back axle or get both driveshafts? And I think I'll get one of the full ones from Skyjacker for $2000 and offroad wise I just go mudding and trail riding, no rock crawling or anything. Looking for a kit that willletme flexsome for the trails are some what washed out. What do you mean by reloacting the body panels, not sure what that is?

http://www.aqualu.com/5210%20templat...ter%20copy.jpg These are replacement fenders that allow you to run a 35" tire with a stock susp.Pick up a set of rear flares and trim rear wheelwell. This is a B.C. company there products are made from 5/32 marine grade aluminum $690.00 a pair Can. $ for front In previous link shows how to move stock fenders

Jon_Smith 03-29-2010 04:26 PM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

Im not interested in the fenders. I don't want the lift just so I can fit the tires but so I can go off-roading without having to worry too much on what my Jeep can and can not tackle.

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

how much money do you have to spend? If you unhook the sway bars on a tj it is amazing how much the stock suspention flexes.AS to your lift question here goes first you will need a slip yoke eliminator kit for t-case,super short is best on a tj as it allows a longer driveshaft which reduces the operating angle on the u joints which means more miles between maintenance,A cv style rear drive shaft is next. The lift i would go 4" susp lift &1" body lift, the body lift will give clearance to do a tummy tuck, get rid of the shovel shaped trans mount for a flatter one better quality lift kits will offer these as options, progressive rate springs ride nicer for a DD control arms should have a rebuildable flex end longer shocks ,longer brake lines ,some type of steering correction,The more money you spend on a higher quality kit will save you money in the long run.by having all the parts you need .It is not out of line to spend $4000.Next if your jumping to 35s add $1000 for a gear swap for the diffsIf i had to do my jeep again i would do a 1" body lift , a slip yoke eliminator and driveshaft to do a tummy tuck high clearance fenders and 35s the money i would save on the susp lift would buy lockers for both diffs

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

On estimation I have about 8-10 grand to spend.

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

any of the cheaper kits will get you off road it is mainly on road handling and reliabllity that come with high end kits.I think my way gives you the most bang for your buck move fenders and trim rear to match 1 weekend 0$ 1" body lift $200 or search the net for home brewed ones slipyoke eliminator &drive shaft $900 make your own skid plate $100 gears and lockers for both diffs $2800 total $4000 you would have a jeep that drives like stock, well almost nothing with 35s drives like stock stock steering angles a flat bottom for better clearance a rear detriot front selectable locker would drive circles around a stock rubi

Sid1966 03-29-2010 06:13 PM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

$ 10,000 nice budget go for the high end kit and all the optional stuff they offer like the high clearance skid plate some long arm kits come with this and that also mounts the control arms if you have a dana 35 rear diff you will prob want to swap to a d44 or ford 8.8 as a d35 and big tires wont mix when you hit the rocks

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

Sid, you have driveline issues with a 2 1/2" susp lift? Damn I've got 4" with no issues at all. A SYE is a great upgrade but if you don't have the cash it can wait, I've been wheelin my TJ for 3yrs without a SYE and haven't had any issues.

Sid1966 03-30-2010 08:06 AM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

yes i have driveline issues was told when i bought that i would be fine but i have issues replacing rear u joints about every 10000 km I have 4.0 3 spd auto my rear shaft is only 17" long am also running a dropped t case and 1" motor mount lift dont really have issues on road but when the rear flexes i can feel the u-joints binding from drivers seat

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

if you want 35s sit down and make a list.tires, regear your diffs , bumpers, winch, how much do you have left for a lift I have a superwinch lp8500 from canadian tire $399 have used it a lot good winch for the money i would get a sye and rear driveshaft so you can do a tummy tuck the extra inches under the middle will make a big difference off road, i built my own bumpers as the aftermarket ones can be pricey.Get prices on all the stuff you want then get the best kit you can afford

Jon_Smith 03-30-2010 10:19 AM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

I think I might go with Superlifts 6" Rock Runner Suspension with Shocks for 03-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ. Then stay away from a a body and just get the SYE kit and cv driveshaft, what do you mean by tummy tuck?

Sid1966 03-30-2010 10:57 AM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

tummy tuck look under your jeep at the trans mount it hangs down about 4"s you move this up to give more clearance that mount acts like a shovel in mud digs in and packs mud around trans &transfer case.kits are available but too expensive in my opinion do a google search on it making your own isnt that hard and way cheaper if your jeep is a 4.0 you can pick up used tj 4cyl axles with lower gears cheaper and easier than re gearing your diffs.keep in mind that the d35 rear axle is not usually recomendedfor tires larger than 31s,it will have a slow death on the street and mud with 35s but wont last long in rocks i think you will be happy with the rock runner kit

Jon_Smith 03-30-2010 11:06 AM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

Wll Im currently geared with 4.10's. What should I regear too instead? Running 35's hopefully. I hear these tummy tucks are expensive cause the skid went up by the like 500$ or something.

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

one more suggestion do a google search on New Brunswick jeep clubs try to meet some people there so you can look at what others are using for lifts in your area ask about tires too a tire that works in Ont mud might not be worth jack in N.B. a picture is worth a thousand words so looking at the real thing is always better,do lots of research before spending your money lots of drive shaft info here would still recomend the super short slip yoke eliminator thoughhttp://driveshaftsuperstore.com/index.html

Jon_Smith 03-30-2010 12:37 PM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

So do I need to regear or ..?

Sid1966 03-30-2010 01:50 PM

Re: Lifting my 2004 TJ.

you dont have to but you will notice a big power loss with the big tires compare to stock your brakes will require maintenance more often as well.1995-2000 ford explorer 8.8 rear diffs are good swap they also have disc brakes
