Help Please, distributor installation, timing setup
Hi All,
I got a 1997 Jeep TJ, I decided to replaced the plugs, wires, rotor and cap, when I attempted to remove the cap, I broke the two bolts, so I went ahead and removed the distributor without making any notes where the cap was pointing, big big mistake. I managed to removed the two broken bolts with out any issues, but when I put every thing together, the Jeep will not run, I attempted many times to set the distributor to the correct position but the Jeep would not start or it starts but won't rev, back fires, so I know my distributor gear is not set properly and I don't know the procedure to setup it. I tried removing spark plug # 1 and made sure the piston at TDC, and tried to put the distributor but the rotor wouldn't line #1 on the cab. Would some please provide me with the steps in order to set the distributor correctly. Thank you for your time, Rafi |
Re: Help Please, distributor installation, timing setup
I had the same problem with an engine I put in my YJ. I marked the timing mark on the front pulley then I hooked timing light. Then I pulled all of the plugs so it will turn over fast. With all of the lights off in the shop I had a helper turn over the engine. The light showed how far the timing was off and which way I had to move the distributor was out. It worked for me good luck.
