Default Grand Cherokee Transfer Case for a TJ

Hey guys - hope someone can help a Jeep newbie. My son's 2005 TJ has a broken transfer case. I just happen to have an 04 Grand Cherokee in-operable in my yard and read in an old post on here where a member indicated that although the GC transfer case is sightly larger that it will fit and work with the TJ.

Opinions welcome.

I can't say for definite what will fit but I know what won't fit. For some reason the output shaft from the transmission to the t/case on four cylinders is different to the one on sixes. There were a number of different t/cases used on the grand cherokees. I believe the ones on the sixes should interchange but I'm not sure about driveshafts. The v8's were all wheel drive single speed so I don't think he would want it even if it did fit.

John,

Welcome to the forum!

There were different T-Cases we used back then, I'll agree with oldfart, feel maybe the sixes will work.
From my vantage point, wouldn't hurt to grab both VIN# from the TJ and GC and review with one of your local Chrysler dealers. I don't have anything "official" on my end here I can advise.

Good luck!

Which engine and transmission? Anything out of a V8 (behind the (5)45RFE) won't fit into anything else.
