Gears & Lockers

What gears do you have now/or what do you plan on putting into your ride? Also a locker what is your choice? I am curious to find out what is best for my ride and also it will help others in deciding what is best for them.

2004 WJ 4.0L 3.73 gears 265/75-16, will be changed to 4.56 and e-lockers F/R. 4.10's will take me back to almost stock but I'll be towing a small trailer occasionaly in the future so going with the 4.56's for a little extra torque

Re: Gears & Lockers

Depends on tire size and engine. My 4L XJ stayed at the 3.55s and ran 31s but to run 33s even remotely comfortable in my 4cyl YJ I needed 4.88s

As for locker, lincoln lock it :D or if its a DD part time rig I'd just put a lunch box up front and not worry about it.

I have at present 3.07 in my stock diff's d30 and d35. Rec'd a quote the other day for 4.10 or whatever detroit made tru-track in front and arb w/air compressor for rear. I am running 33x12.5r15 mud tires (may later put 35 mudder) Everything installed priced I think its high but labor isn't cheap $3500.

Whoa, are you actually going to put money in the Turdyfive when you're already at 33s? D35 locked is bad news man. I've twisted or bent a good 4 or 5 shafts in my turdyfive before i upgraded to an 8.8

Re: Gears & Lockers

For offroading the newer jeeps have 3.73 as stock, if your running 33's - 35's thats okay, but if your stock at 3.07 I wud go for 4.10 . Some will say 4.56 is better for 35's and up, even 4.88 but I think the 4.88 on 33's or even 35's is over kill, unless its going to be a trailer queen, then it really doesn't matter., but running the hwy with 4.88 is a bit much.

Re: Gears & Lockers

I'm planning on gearing 4.10..not sure if I'm gonna stay with a Dana or go Ford 8.8 though.I'm looking to do it cheap,so I'm looking in the scrapyards first.
I personally don't need or want lockers, but if I were to install,it would be Arb all the way,Tried and true.
Mr.White,if you've got a garage,I can put all that together for ya..:)and all you gotta do is throw a burger down my throat.lol

Re: Gears & Lockers

Thanks for the offer much appreciated but the big problem is no garage unless it was a one day job or even if it fell over to part of another I should be able to use a friends garage in the next town over, but its a car port garage so not very large (heated)

Re: Gears & Lockers

I think the 4.88 makes a big difference and really doesnt feel like overkill. its only like 2$ extra and it retrieves so much of the power lost by putting larger tires. I couldn't believe I drove around on stock gears for so long when I upgraded.

Brad if you have the 4L go with 4.10 or 4.56 if you dont plan on going any bigger but go 4.88 if you think you may go up to 36/37s
