yes i know that a jeep has the aerodynamics of a brick and does not get a great mileage! but i am just trying to figure out what is "normal" for a TJ.

my TJ is stock other than 31" tires and a stainless steel header and complete ss exhuast, manual 5 sp trans. I also found that it has 3.55 rear ends

I get 50 km to the first 1/4 tank and 110 km to the next 1/4 tank which brings me to 160km for half a tank. right now i have 195 km and i only have 1/3 tank left.

is this distance normal on a tank of fuel?

what is the range on a tank of gas, as i have never gone til almost on empty?
is there different sizes of tanks?

Hey Bman,

I'm in a similar situation to you, 2" budget boost on 31" tires.

I find when I fill up, my first quarter tank is gone quite quickly while the last quarter tank takes a longer time to empty,
I average about 400 kilometers to a tank.

I think it is very important that you find out how far you can go while the gas light is on,
carry a gas can and drive it till it stops,
this will give you an indication of how much mileage is in reserve.

Another couple of points to increase mileage,
I change my oil regularily, usually every month and I rotate my tires with every oil change,
check the pressure in your tires, under inflated tires turns the jeep into a pig,
have a look at your spark plugs, mine were worn to nubs and my starting improved when i changed them,
the deposit on the plugs will tell you how the combustion is in the chamber.
Clean out/replace your air filter too. All these things will affect your mileage...

You change the oil and rotate the tires every month? Wow! that must be some well maintained Jeep. Oil changes for me are every three months and tires every six. Pressure is a big thing (you're right), I check it every couple of weeks - at least this past winter I did.
I get about 375k to a tank - about $65.00. My Jeep also has 31x10.5 tires, soon to be 33x10.5.
In a Jeep, I think it comes down to driving habits. There isn't anything you can do to use less gas other than keeping your foot of the gas peddle. I've tried 55mph, slow pull-away from light - that sort of thing, and it does give better gas milage. It's not as much fun though.

One thing I wud NOT suggest is running your tank dry (or till it stops) being an older jeep there just might be some gunk in the tank with which your going to suck it up. Here's what you can do go to the gas stn fill it up take your mileage drive then fill it again once it gets to say 1/2 tank do this say twice and then calculate your mpg. I make 18 mpg with 33x12.5r15 mudders and the weight of a winch and 33" spare but have 4.11 gears. I don't jack rabbit start from a light, I run under 100 km per hr and do 90% hwy.

thanks for the posts, I guess i have some work cut out for me, as at present i am no where near 350-400 to a tank.
I will try new air filter and set of plugs and see if that makes any difference.

With my 2003 I figure I'm averaging around 14 litres per 100 kms. My wife's new Ford Focus averages 7. Quite a difference but not as much fun You pay for your thrills.

okay ran many tanks of fuel. new air filter, new plugs, ran a whole can of sea foam ( two 1/2 can runs) and my mileage... I can't get past 300km to a tank, and I drive it like its a china cup! I really cant ever see myself taking it off road, as only having a 300km range and that doesn't give much room to play in the mud!

Does anyone have any suggestions on why only 300 to a tank when others are getting 375-400 ??

The question is not so much km per tank ( what capacity is the tank, how accurate is the gauge?) but rather consumpion per 100kms. So:
Fill up the tank and set the trip odometer to zero.
After around 250 kms. fill 'er up again.
Divide the litres used by the kms.
The result, x100 will give you the average litres per 100 kms.
As stated in a previous post I'm getting around 14. The chap who said he's getting 18mpg is getting 16. I'd say anything over 20 could be a problem.

jeeps just suck up gas and really there is no magic solution drive it and have fun

I'm getting 300 to a tank on 35's so I'd say you've got a problem somewhere there. Are you driving with the top down everywhere?
